Yep - in late 50s, there was a plaza 1/2 mile down the street that had a Kresge’s and a Woolworths along with groceries and other stores - the church (and dentist) was less than a quarter mile and the hospital less than 3/4 mile - and, best of all, we knew all the yards with fruit trees, etc...we had our pick of mulberries, cherries, apples, peaches, pears, apricots, grapes, and, as long as we left the gardens alone, most folks didn’t mind us going through for our “snack raids”....

Two years ago I bugged out to a tiny, rural NW Tennessee town that’s so remote we have to pipe in the sunshine. It’s been a great experience.
