A “big swath of territory” is a relative term. Russia wants to steal the whole country. The last major metropolitan area to change hands was Kherson when Ukraine liberated it and there was much rejoicing among the population. Since then, Russia has taken mill towns at a huge cost. All those Russian cadavers stacking up may eventually wake up even Russians deep in the sauce. Putin is on thin ice.
You work to cut off Ukraine’s logistical support. Ukraine needs support from Europe and America. Freedom-loving people support freedom-loving people. Give Ukraine the stuff and those good Cossacks will keep sinking Russian ships, destroying Russian tanks, shooting down Russian planes, and keep destroying Russian infantry formations. Cut them off and Russians will enrich themselves with Ukrainian resources and will indeed be a greater threat to us than they already are.
