“It was his story that allowed the movie”
Why is it “his” story? A family taking in and financially and emotionally caring for a homeless, different race person isn’t a story in itself?
It says on her website they adopted Michael. Probably shouldn’t use that if they didn’t adopt him.
I remember watching him play. He was good. But Oher had the drive to be a great college and pro player, whether Lee Anne Tuohy brought him in or not.
Because he was the draw for the movie. If he had become a star accountant, nobody would have cared about this movie to the same degree.
When it comes to movies, it’s whomever puts bums in the seats that get compensated the most. That’s how movies work.
I agree with that. It certainly could come back to bite them when their case goes before a judge.
Good catch! Her website DOES call him her "son" and "adopted son":
"They are the proud parents of daughter, Collins, and sons, Michael Oher and Sean, Jr."
"The adopted son of Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy, Michael spent most of his childhood in various foster homes and moved in with the Tuohys when he was 16."
Without Michael Oher, the Tuohy family would still have had 125 restaurants, and there would be virtually zero difference in their wealth and success. They didn't earn their wealth from Oher. Without the Tuohy family, no one would know who Michael Oher is, and he'd likely be living somewhere between lower middle class and abject poverty.
They owned 125 franchise restaurants AND the real estate they were built on. Mostly KFC and Taco Bell. They made their money the old fashioned way, not from Oher.
80% of Dems believe you
I know that. But without Oher, they would have been just another wealthy southern family, and there would have been no reason to make a movie about them. As for Oher, perhaps he’d have played in the NFL if he’d never met the Ohers, or perhaps not, and there wouldn’t have been a movie about him, either.
That was my only point, that it took both parties to justify making a movie at all. As for who got how much money, I couldn’t care less if I tried for a year.
As a Steeler fan, I remember Michael Oher of the hated Ravens false-starting on nearly every play when he started on the “Blind Side” i.e. Left Tackle, and the refs turned a “Blind Eye” because the movie had been a hit.
He’d get a running start (backwards, usually), and the totally corrupt announcers would praise his “quick reflexes” when it was blatant cheating.
He ended up not being good enough for left tackle, was moved to right tackle, and then moved to a couple of other teams once the shine wore off...
Still, those years vs. the Steelers were aggravating to watch - almost like he got preferential treatment because he was a movie star...
It is easy to check Tennessee law. Adult adoptions are allowed. So Tuohy is lying and Oher is telling the truth.
I have never thought that conservatives might be racist until I read the reactions to this story on FR. After all, we all love Clarence Thomas and Thomas Sowell. But the common attitude here that the big black football player must be lying and the white people must be telling the truth has shocked and dismayed me.
Adopted is not a legal term.
I can adopt someone into my home. I need to legally establish the relationship if I choose to go further. There are usually different kinds of legal ties from marital to conservator to guardian ....
Yes but it is meaningless
