When the Dominicans moved to Inwood, which they shared with the Irish, the Jews and a variety of other New Yorkers, they actually cleaned up Inwood Hill Park because they wouldn’t take the threats and crime coming up from lower in Manhattan. And many Dominicans are black themselves, so it had nothing to do with race.
It’s culture. Dominican culture can be pretty bad - mostly because of the big drug influence at that time - but they sure didn’t just sit back and take it when their families and businesses were threatened by thugs. People from the Caribbean are very good with their knives or their fists.
