I don’t remember that. I lurked for many years before signing up, and when I did it was just like it is today.
If I recall, the differences I noticed were mostly in the display. I remember when it changed, I didn’t like it. Now I can’t even remember the original version.

What is interesting is that is not a vicious attack—so maybe we are really are below the radar.
My simple rule for determining whether Wikipedia is in attack mode—Do they use the word “extremist” to describe a person/group?
In this case (so far) the answer is “no”.
