We May Have Been Calling Machu Picchu The Wrong Name For Over 100 Years. One of the most famous archaeological sites in the world may be named after a simple misunderstanding.

“Who cares?”

What authority gives you the assumed right to speak for me?

This happens all the time. A lot of cultures weren’t as into naming everything as Europeans. That’s how we wind up with stuff like Tucson’s Rillito River (rillito being Spanish for little river). I imagine it was some explorer asking a local “what do you call that?” “what the little river?” “ree-ee-to, thanks”.

Machu Picchu means Old Peak.

Huayna Picchu means Young Peak.

And the Inca probably didn't call it either.

I guess we can look forward to Taibei then.
Taipei = “North Taiwan” in Chinese;
“Peking” = “North Capital” in Chinese, now rendered as Beijing.

The -yama ending means “Mount” in Japanese, no?
People still say “Mount Fujiyama” and on Ninja Warrior, “Mount Midoriyama.”

Pardon the thread highjacking, but the most ludicrous historical "misunderstanding" in recent memory was the doofus leftists kneeling in the Capitol for George Floyd wearing Kente Cloths.

Kente Cloth Worn By Democrats Was ‘Historically Worn’ By African Empire Involved In Slave Trade...
