This happens all the time. A lot of cultures weren’t as into naming everything as Europeans. That’s how we wind up with stuff like Tucson’s Rillito River (rillito being Spanish for little river). I imagine it was some explorer asking a local “what do you call that?” “what the little river?” “ree-ee-to, thanks”.

“Peking” = “North Capital” in Chinese, now rendered as Beijing.
The -yama ending means “Mount” in Japanese, no?
People still say “Mount Fujiyama” and on Ninja Warrior, “Mount Midoriyama.”
