It’s perhaps no more scientific but I think the term “ethnicity” is more accurate than “race” since it’s arguably true that there is only one race, the human race.
DNA does not tell where you are from.
It tells only some of the places where you have been.

Race matters. It's not the only thing about you that defines you, but it's a thing.
The people saying over and over again that "race is a social construct" hate these two things, but that doesn't make them less true. Many of the people who say "race is a social construct" say the same thing about gender. But, it to is easily tested for (XY and XX, and the vanishingly few others like XXY).

Do you think they made an inadvertent error? It’s possible, but I think not. If it was intentional (likely); it’s amazing and quite damning of the author/editor/publisher.

Mendel and Darwin were roughly contemporaries. Darwin certainly believed in the inferiority of some races. While some of his “races” are ethnicities by our standards, some were races then and now. I don’t know the views of Mendel.
Back then scientists could advance theories, however reprehensible, without risking their careers. The bad theories would be banished when better evidence was discovered rather than via ad hominem attacks.
Race is not a scientific construct.
Scientifically speaking there is no such thing as race.
