Yes ... but to me it is like the old mantra of fighting with the tactics of the last war, failure of nerve and imagination! If you go onto Youtube and search by the term of 'automation', there are lots of scenes from union officials about how many workers would be put on the streets by such.
California wants to IMPOSE a supercharged hour wage mandate of $22 on fast food joints. From the write-ups it appears little cognizance is paid to practicality but rather to a dream, from whom and to benefit whom ... well, just guess!
Me? I think that there will be an EXPLOSION of automation in California as they make employment a toy of the government. If Tesla is automating cars, how far behind is an automated tractor-trailer to get from the port to the next stop across the state line?
One thing I do feel and that is the populace will not see this as a reason to repeat the actions of Europe and mass import of antagonistic immigration. It is slower to start than I like but it is growing.
Robotics.
We should be pouring money into generalized robotics, and bringing back to the US as many non-toxic manufacturing processes as we can.
Imagine a cheap generalized robot, massed produced. And an army of developers and hobbyists teaching it routines for everything from domestic help, factory work, cooking and restaurant workers, grocery store workers, elder care, nursing care, farm work, gardening, etc.
It would be like the PC and the explosion of software that happened once it was cheap enough for people to afford.
The labor dislocations would be hugh and series. But if there is a labor shortage, that’s one way to deal with it. And we would need social programs to deal with the labor disruptions and retraining.
It would free man from the drudgery of many chores, making him more productive.
“Learn to code” says the “experts.” I already know how to code, been doing it for 50 years, but not the right kind of coding that employers want now.
— An older person won’t work as hard — they will be especially relunctant to participate on a “Death March” coding project
— Not as flexible when it comes to new languages, tools and paradigms
— Unrealistic salary expectatios
— Fear that they will quit or retire in the middle of a project
— Concern that they won’t “bond” with the younger workers. Or won’t like be told to do by someone the age of their child (or even grandchild)
Sadly, there is some truth to all of the above.
Yeah, those 30 million illegal aliens , visa overstays and ‘refugees’ just don’t want to work.
“””There are far too few workers in the U.S. to meet rising demand, a problem exacerbated by an aging population, low birthrates, and stifled immigration.””””
Barron’s must be needing some advertising revenue from the Globalists.
Of course, Barrons fails to mention that a major cause of too few workers are the government handouts to the lazy bums who got a lousy degree and now would rather sit around and get high each day.
Locked article so can’t comment on its content. Gee, if the US hadn’t aborted about 63 million people, maybe we wouldn’t have this problem...
... not that the GOPe or Dems want an answer that involves free Americans earning American wages, parents actually raising their children as a family, or cultural integrity ... you know, those things that define “nation” and “civilization.”
I think goal is not so much to get the reader to believe immigration is “stifled”, as much as to accept the “aging population” and “low birthrates” hysteria. Media always pushes these when illegal and other foreign influx is surging. The dumb masses take this propaganda like its sugar and believe its their own brilliant idea to love invasion based on it.
Atlas is shrugging -
and no longer wishes to be the servant of effing morons.
IMO
It’s not just robotics. Once they crack Natural Language Understanding, they will have customer service “agents” who are indistinguishable from a human. They never get tired, mad, disrespectful or make a mistake. And they certainly never break down and give you the truth.
There will be a labor shortage until there is a labor surplus. The hardest jobs to automate will be plumber and electrician.
General availability of basic models, could probably make every nation self sufficient in food production.
But we would need lots of energy.

Heh, heh. Never considered that.
Well...at least she is cute.
It is not worth a subscription unless it is useful to you as an investment resource. I was simply posting due to the over the top, crazy executive summary. The authoress does not have any clue.
I got 3% and a threat of a layoff soon.
I had a great manager, my new one sucks potatoes.
That’s generally true.
She has got Bat Shit Crazy eyes.
Too many people sitting on their butts, producing nothing, yet still consuming stuff produced by others, will create a shortage of “stuff”.
Solution: have fewer leaches.
But oh, they’re not going to need workers with all the AI!
Pay people more and they will show up to fill up the decent jobs.
