Wasn’t there a MASH episode where it was really hot over there?
Post of the day!
First Rule of Scouting:
Be Prepared
SMH....
I was at the national Boy Scout jamboree in 1989, at what used to be Fort A.P. Hill in Virginia. Temperatures reached over 100 a few days straight. We were sweating so bad it was stinging our eyes constantly. But we managed to walk... and wow did we walk... all over that place. They were careful about being prepared for nasty things like heat exhaustion, and one person died of a heart attack. But otherwise it was just one week and a half at Boy Scout camp along with 30,000+ other boys.
95 Fahrenheit? Really? The lack of preparation sounds like the biggest issue - shade and water, it sounds like - but 95? We’re having one of the mildest summers ever in the Pacific Northwest and I was processing firewood in that, no shade, no big deal. Management should have provided the little nippers with sufficient beer. It’s got electrolytes.
Don’t know about that
I always thought the climate in ROK was similar to Western PA when I was there
Having been to big Scout jamboree…I just can’t imagine how you keep thousands of kids busy and SAFE in that heat, in an unshaded camping site, for days or weeks. I read they had over 400 kids with heat exhaustion the first days and had to bring in medical teams to help.
Big shame, that was a long expensive trip for those kids
Are Scouts still successfully fundraising these day? And do wealthy “Alumni” donate as well to keep it going? I wonder if Scouts have an endowment like universities to help pay the bill going forward?
It’s also the title of one of my favorite Tom Lehrer songs:
Be Prepared, by Tom Lehrer
Be prepared! That’s the Boy Scouts’ marching song
Be prepared! As through life you march along
Be prepared to hold your liquor pretty well
Don’t write naughty words on walls if you can’t spell
Be prepared! To hide that pack of cigarettes
Don’t make book if you cannot cover bets
Keep those reefers hidden where you’re sure
That they will not be found
And be careful not to smoke them
When the scoutmaster’s around
For he only will insist that it be shared
Be prepared!
Be prepared! That’s the Boy Scouts’ solemn creed
Be prepared! And be clean in word and deed
Don’t solicit for your sister, that’s not nice
Unless you get a good percentage of her price
Be prepared! And be careful not to do
Your good deeds when there’s no one watching you
If you’re looking for adventure of a
New and different kind
And you come across a Girl Scout who is
Similarly inclined
Don’t be nervous, don’t be flustered, don’t be scared
Be prepared!
BSA prepared children for perversion these days.
Then we rode to the barn atop the load, a couple of guys stayed below putting the bales on a conveyor.
The rest of us were in the tin roofed hay mow tossing up and stacking bales.
It was thick with hay dust and usually well over 120 degrees F.
Ugh, I can’t even imagine. Getting in one of those tents would be like sitting in an oven! And a pink tent for Boy Scouts? WTH?
90* did you have a cold front?
We get 90 at night and that’s a low.😁
Brando, it what your body craves.
Brando, it what your body craves.
I’m in South Texas. That’s normal for this time of year.
What’s with the PINK tents?
Good gosh. Stuffed animals. Little backpacks with cute little doggy faces. And girls, lots of them in the pictures.
Subverted and destroyed, as intended.
I am glad I got to experience it as a kid. I doubt Scouts in those days would have been as "unprepared" as these appear to be.
Although, might be some wanton hetrosexualism taken place?
I guess a scout isn’t always prepared. Head for the Hilton.
This really saddens me. My sentiments are not anti-female. I just oppose the co-ed aspect of “The Scouts”, never mind the homosexualization of it..
I always heard from adult women who pushed for females to be admitted that when they were in Girl Scouts, they never got to do the things the Boy Scouts did, and that rankled them.
My question as an adult would be to say “Why not? Why didn’t you just do the same things?”
But the Boy Scouts are gone now.
Now, we have pink tents, stuffed animals, and unprepared “Scouts”.
