Critical and analytic thought, identifying common fallacies, having the moral and character strength to resist what always becomes a pressure to go along with these social movements and fads is not there anymore.
It probably never was, most people are sheep/followers, but at least historically you had a more homogeneous and doctrinal based value system which was functional (religion / common US culture which was natural law and common sense based). These people were still just followers and not really thinking much about why they are doing the things they are. Yet, what they believed made them productive in a social and economic context, people shared these values and you had what one can call a unique American culture in a society that was moving up/growing in every aspect.
