A nuclear EMP could disable thousands of satellites at once without resulting in as much shrapnel in space.
If there is some sort of force from the explosion, then lots of satellites could be kicked out of orbit, even if they don't blow into bits.

I would wager that nukes have been in space for decades—from several countries.
The notion that weapons grade technology is available and then is intentionally not deployed is beyond belief—if for no other reason than deterrence.
This is really old technology—and the discussions we are having here would probably put any defense think tank to sleep.
Next we will be debating whether bow and arrows should be deployed in space.

When WWIII starts, the first thing to go will be all the satellites.

This sounds like the USSR and FOBS from the 1960s and the 1967 Outer Space Treaty from 1967. Not a new idea, China has been looking at their owns version of FOBS since 2021.

The Gary Seven episode sparked my lifelong lust affair with Terri Garr, but Young Frankenstein sealed the deal.

Testing a delivery system is a concern, something to keep an eye on, but its not a red line like actual deployment is.

Yup—I think we are going to degrade into a debate about what kind of nuclear weapon is in “space” and not in “space”.
This is a dumb topic.
Anyone who has launch capability and nuke capability can put a nuclear weapon in space.

The article is a few years old—and that is China.
The notion that we and Russia do not have the capability to deploy such weapons is absurd on its face.
If they are not deployed it is solely because there is no strategic or tactic benefit in doing so.
The technology is old at this point.

Do we still have those ‘Rods from God’ kinetic impact bombs up there or are those already obsolete?
To: algore
Technically difficult, yes?
Missiles would have to survive re-entry just like any space vehicle.

The notion that we and Russia do not have the capability to deploy such weapons is absurd on its face. You changed your argument from 'they are deployed' to 'the capability to deploy exists'
No point in my continuing if you cant concede that.
