We would still be in Afghanistan if the gop had their way. Thank you Joe Biden for carrying out Trump's vision of leaving Afghanistan as fast as possible.

For Raytheon, Boeing, General Dynamics etc. Iraq and Afghanistan saved them from an even bigger post-Cold War downsizing.

So totally worth it for them...

"since the Taliban resumed ruling Afghanistan in 2021, the country has returned to being a shelter for terrorist organizations.."

We had a whole al Queda organization in prison at Bagram Air Base, that Biden left to be released, rather than take them to Gitmo.

1,500 of the worst of the worst.

After a little R&R, their organizations were stood right back up, as guests of the Taliban Government.

Al Queda and Taliban elites have significantly intermarried. The Taliban is not going to give them up.

Biden ran away from Afghanistan like a frightened sissy. He left 16,000 night vision gaggles there. Now they are in the hands of the sons of Osama Bin Laden. This was the plan.

Shouldn’t we have kept Bagram AFB as hammer hanging over the Talibans heads and for its strategic location?

“Shouldn’t we have kept Bagram AFB”

It would be untenable to defend and supply, if the Afghan Government was hostile. Even with a friendly Government in Kabul, it was challenging to defend and supply.

But it did have regional significance.

Appreciate your response and opinion.
Think we should have tried to hold it anyway.
Change my mind?

Full circle on a futile 20 year occupation, tens of thousands of deaths and injuries, several trillion dollars more in debt...

We needed to get out. The Afghan people wanted the Taliban. It was a waste of our time. Donald Trump recognized that. He would have handled the withdrawal better. But the result would have been the same. Taliban takes over Afghanistan.

i heard that the taliban is now the second largest arms dealer because of all the stuff biden left there- I’
m sure they are supplying al queda with arms too- so that they can regroup-

Here’s a post on the issue- but not the one i read earlier- can’t find that one

The Taliban Are Now Arms Dealers
Terrorists are shopping for left-behind American weapons—and turning them against Washington’s friends around the world.

And in France

I can't think of a more literal example of people not learning from history than attendees at a venue where Islamic terrorists massacred non-Muslims cheering Islamic terrorists https://t.co/wtWrwdhUeO— Daniel Greenfield - "Hang Together or Separately" (@Sultanknish) February 18, 2024

Yes, Trump negotiated with the Taliban, but the agreement had caveats. The Taliban broke conditions of the agreement, and Trump said that Biden should have halted his withdrawal plans.
Also, Trump’s plan was to leave about 800 troops - according to his Sec. Def. Their plan was to try to form an Interim gov’t and leave some military forces their to continue to work with the Afghan security forces. They never planned to cut & run like Biden did.

It must be noted that the Taliban is not a monolithic force.

There are both Taliban realists and zealots, old men and young men, rational and irrational. Trump tried to negotiate with the realistic elders. It was the irrational young zealots that finally prevailed against Biden.
