I understand threatening to commit a crime, but how did they interfere with civil rights?

Apparently. Nobody ever charged anyone for all the nastiness I had to endure when I started wearing a yarmulke in public. Sometimes by whites, sometimes by blacks. No internet back then. But I did get punched in the face once, and did get surrounded by an angry mob once years later, just as examples. Nobody ever charged. Criminal charges never interested me, either.
Life is tough. Grow psychic armor, and either pay back in kind or just ignore.
