That was a price for getting support from the National GOP. Reagan was not the chosen candidate of the Republican establishment. Howard Baker and GHW Bush were.
Left to his own devices Reagan would have chosen his political bff Paul Laxalt. But he had the chance to do that in 1984 and didn’t. FDR had three different VPs, and America was very fortunate Truman was the last instead of Henry Wallace.
Alan Simpson? Simpson was the prime promoter of the 1986 illegal alien amnesty. So, “no”.

George Wallace, when he ran 3rd party in 1968:
“There’s not a dime’s worth of difference between the Democrat and Republican parties.”
He turned out to be ahead of the curve.
