<p>Brian Robertson was just months away from graduation at Moore High School in Moore, Oklahoma, last year when he found the beginnings of what he thought was a short story on a school computer. He copied the file to another computer, added some paragraphs to the initial text and then promptly got arrested.</p>

<p>As thousands of U.S. military personnel in California deploy to the Persian Gulf in preparation for war, some of them are having a serious problem.</p>
<p>They can't get guns.</p>
<p>Oh sure, the military provides them with an array of weapons: M-16s, grenade launchers, squad automatic weapons and so on. They're heavily armed.</p>

As a military honor guardsman, Patrick Cubbage had a simple message to the families of deceased veterans at graveside services. "God bless you and this family, and God bless the United States of America," he would say as he presented a folded flag to them. Because of that, Cubbage was fired in October from his job at the Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Burlington County, near McGuire Air Force Base. He breached cemetery protocol, his supervisor said, by deviating from the script. "No family member ever objected," Cubbage, 54, a Vietnam combat veteran, retired Philadelphia police...

ALEXANDRIA -- Two former top-level Pentagon officials were charged Friday with accepting more than $1 million in bribes and kickbacks and using their influence over defense contracts to extort cash, prostitutes and boxing tickets. Robert Lee Neal Jr., 50, of Bowie, Md., was appointed by President Clinton in 1996 to serve as director of the Pentagon's office of Small and Disadvantaged Business Utilization (SADBU), which assures that minority-owned businesses get a share of available defense contracts. According to a 52-page affidavit filed by Cynthia Stroot, a special agent with the Defense Criminal Investigative Service, Neal and his top assistant, Francis...

<p>He's an old man now, frail and sick and lying in a bed in an Orange County nursing home. But there was a time when he was a friend to millions of Americans, a man who brought laughter to countless guys who had precious little to laugh about.</p>

Doh! 1. WILL THE REAL DUMMY PLEASE STAND UP? AT&T fired President John Walter after nine months, saying he lacked intellectual leadership. He received a $26 million severance package. Perhaps it's not Walter who's lacking intelligence. 2. WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM OUR FRIENDS: Police in Oakland, California spent two hours attempting to subdue a gunman who had barricaded himself inside his home. <p>Periodically the Register recognizes a letter that eloquently expresses a viewpoint or engenders a debate on a topic of public interest.</p>
<p>It was our normal Thursday morning business meeting at our real-estate office. No big deal. Before the meeting we hung around the bagel table, as usual, with our coffee. He stood aside, looking a little shy and awkward and very young, a new face in a room full of extroverted salespeople. An average looking guy, maybe 5 feet 8 inches. A clean-cut, sweet-faced kid. I went over to chat with him. Maybe he was a new salesman?</p>

I've never posted anything on FreeRepublic. I guess I've never had anything profound to share with anyone until now. My wife's grand-father John "Pete" Howell of Andrews, Texas, died yesterday. He was 86 years old. He was my friend. He served his country as a medic in the 36th Infantry Division of the Texas Army National Guard in World War II. He was wounded in battle near the Rapido river and was captured. He spent 18 months in a Nazi prisoner of war camp so that we could be free...I'm going to miss him

It's Here...The Federal ID card By Hari Heath Right now the U.S. House of Representatives is debating in committee what could be the single most federal power expanding bill in American history -- HR 4633, the "Driver's License Modernization Act of 2002." Since its passage last October during the post-Sept. 11 hysteria, many Americans thought the more ominously Orwellian "Provide Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism (PATRIOT) Act" was intended to bring about the federally-enforced police state. However, if you read the PATRIOT Act while comparing it with existing U.S. Code, it was mostly a housecleaning bill (The...

SPOTLIGHT: Arrests look political in Forsyth Richard Whitt - Staff Monday, June 10, 2002 Residents of Forsyth County who speak out against their government officials may do so at their peril. Two political activists, David Milum and Terrance Sweeney, have been arrested --- and one was jailed overnight --- for alleged aggressive behavior toward county officials. On April 18, David Milum was sitting in the kitchen of his house on Jot Em Down Road when two deputies walked in, without knocking, he says, and arrested him on a "good behavior" warrant. Milum's offense? He had frightened County Commissioner Marcie Kreager...
