Plato didn't advocate anything. Plato's Socrates would be the one advocating something, if he were, which he isn't, as he says on at least a dozen occasions. Sometimes the best way to refute something is to defend it poorly, or to bring it's premises and conclusions to light.Don't take someone's else's word for it, though (even mine, and I wouldn't steer you wrong willingly).

Since FR is a corporation, do you plan to shut down for 60 days prior to elections, or will you simply censor posts?.

Like I said I haven't read it but I am told the Republic was a totalitarian state with no private property under the big brother "philosopher king".

I'm with you Jim! How can I help? Should all of us FReepers start contributing to mount a Defense Fund for you? Should we flood the offices of our Reps with letters? What should we do?

Guard with jealous attention the public liberty. Suspect anyone who approaches that jewel, for nothing will protect it but downright force, and whenever you give up that force, you are inevitably ruined. Patrick Henry @1789

An exellent choice of words from patrick Henry. I will at this time cite John F. Kennedy's inaugural address
Those who make peaceful change impossible make violent revolution inevitable.

Socrates and his interlocutors outline two cities which they figure are perfect in justice in order to discover what justice is in the private man (Adiemantus and Glaucon pose two related but seperate questions to Socrates: will being just make a man happy in contrast to seeming just, and what about justice makes it preferable to seeming to be just but really being unjust?). The whole thing is far too long and too deep to go into without a whole thread of its own, and even then I'm in no way qualified to teach Plato--too subtle. Just don't jump to conclusions about the man or his work on what you hear about it, because most people won't get it for the simple fact of not giving it enough time and study to really understand it. It also takes a good teacher unless you happen to be one of the great minds of history...

I don't know. I believe it applies to broadcast media. I do not think it applies to what individuals say on the internet. Not even McCain would be that nuts (I hope).ROTFLMAO!
He won't be that nuts as long as we are good little citizens and don't criticize him. Expect a visit from McManiac's Internet Police after the first time one of us posts something negative about him...('cause don'tcha know _Jim works out of his office???)

OK, so having come late to the thread and having stopped laughing so hard at your naivete regarding McRectum, I'm wondering if I put a website up criticizing a candidate within that 60 period if I'm breaking the law?
'Cause I've never built my own website and I figure I got about 5 months to learn how...

Shays-Meehan will probably be dead BEFORE the November election.
Too bad they didn't die before concocting this.
