This "educated" idiot is so smart that he can see and smell a cigarette...good for him. Yet he hasn't the "Rice" paddy intelligence to realize that the fumes from vehicles laden with carbon monoxide which he cannot see or smell are far more hazardous to his health. Wonders never cease in smokin Nazi lala land.

I watched my my grandfather and mother die of emphysemia. Believe me they took more out of the system than they put in. My grandfather was almost refused benefits because of his many hospitalizations. And when the bulk of the baby boomers goes through the same mill they will suck it dry. (They are hitting their 60s now, it is going to be ugly.)

Of course all of the money the smokers paid in all those years was put back by the government and is just waiting to pay for all of these slugs medical care. . . . RIGHT. My daughter will pay for these moron's chronic health problems and extended hospital stays. If these people want to destroy their health, fine, just don't sit there and act like it is all paid for. That money is LONG GONE.

When you being wheeled around with an oxygen container attached to your wheelchair, half psychotic from the combination of cortisteroids, breathing drugs, and other assorted drug, so short of breath you can't take your oxygen off to talk to your grandchild then write me an email telling me what a good idea cigarettes are. Tell your family as they watch your die with nothing but a single organ damaged by your incredible stupidity. (My mother and grandfather at least have an excuse they started smoking before all of this was proved)

all too often I find myself unable to avoid cigarette smoke

I have a suggestion for this whining wimp. Go to www.cheaperthandirt.com and buy yourself a gas mask. Two good things will happen. You won't have to smell the smoke, and the mask will muffle your whining and complaining so I don't have to hear it.

You're right on that one, there's lots of nasty irritating things that I don't like, as you say, "thats life," and I live with it without all this complaining.

OK, I'll chime in here at stir up some heat. As a highly competitive athlete I would never smoke and avoid second hand smoke as best I can. I don't think banning smoking is right at all, but I do think it's not too much to ask others to take it someplace else when in my company (and without getting snapped at). Also, if you smoke, please use the ashtray in your car and not the streets.

I don't sit around and get upset about things, I say what is on my mind and let it go. If the other person doesn't want to let it go, well we can do that too.

Don't you love it when the people who come over to your home and smoke outside and just stamp their butts out by your door and leave them for you to pick up!

As far as this thread goes, smoker's are powerfully addicted and when their habit is threatened they react badly.

I'll call your anecdote and raise you one. My grandparents and their siblings, my parents and their siblings, I and my siblings have all smoked and not one of us has ever been hospitalized with a "smoking-related" illness. Not one. If the government misused the taxes we have all paid in, that's not our problem.

Excuse me? The states will be getting 209 BILLION of our dollars for the next 22 years! Long gone, my butt. Far more money is squandered by nonsmokers in that last 7-9 years they spend in nursing homes, dribbling down their bibs, than is spent on smokers who (STATISTICALLY) die sooner. If you cared about the truth, it's out there for your edification. If you're content to simply carry on in your bitter ignorance, that's okay too.

Unlike you, I realize that smoking is a RISK but it does not guarantee any particular smoker will suffer any of the dire consequences you predict. And unlike you, I realize that NOT SMOKING is no guarantee you won't suffer such illnesses either. Twice as many smokers never develop a "smoking-related" illness as do. You have been brainwashed and seem happy about it. Sad.

That's a cop-out often used when antis can't answer our reasonable complaints about the War on Smokers.

PC has not only bred hypersensitivity but condescension.
The loss of manners is the problem, not smoking.
For decades (centuries?) smokers coexisted with non smokers with minimal friction. Rules of manners and etiquette dealt with most problems and people could actually talk to each other.

Not much has changed with the exception of the arrival of anti-smokus neanderthalis dramaticus, the hypersensitive moral brute.

Taking it somewhere else was never a problem, until the anti-smoker goes where smoking is already taking place. Used to be they had enough sense to avoid what bothers them.
As for using the ashtray, it seems to be a cultural and regional thing. I have always been anal about using car ashes for ashes and butts, not for coins and lipsticks. So all the dramatic outraged canniption fits do not apply to me.

Yet I know from experience that just having an unlit cigarette will send many into a genuine rage.
Mental health it's not.

I'm not kidding; I cause (he he he he) canniption and hissy fits walking through department stores and restaurants with an unlit cigarette in my mouth.

Mabye I ought to try that. I don't smoke (except a cigar every once in a while), but these sissies that get all bent out of shape over a cigarette make me vary between amusement and exasperation. I spent my childhood in parts of FL where forest fires were (and still are) a fairly common occurence, and I bet these sissies wouldn't survive five minutes if they were downwind if they're truly that sensitive to smoke. I think that in many cases it's all just an act.

What is sad is you are totally addicted to a substance that does nothing but kill you and you are in denial that it is TOTALLY STUPID and TOTALLY SELFISH. Only a completely self centered person would do this to himself and his family. And no it isn't 100% but someone who is willing to possibly put himself and his family through the hell that this habit can cause because they are too weak to go through the few weeks of withdrawal obviously cares more about a cigarette than their family or themselves. That is sad.

Pretty presumptuous of you to claim you know all about me when you know nothing. You don't even know whether or not I smoke, yet you've judged me and found me SELFISH and WEAK and STUPID? You're an arrogant, whiny, anal-retentive neurotic control freak. IMO, of course. Grow up. Do some homework and come back when you can debate the issue like an adult.

Max McGarrit,

First, you are a self proclaimed smoker. You are addicted and your addiction behavior is being threatened. I understand your reaction. Chill!!!! I have no intention of debating you on that. I will just say this, if you have the audacity to sit there and claim smoking is a good idea and that smokers pay for all of the damage their selfish behavior causes you are in denial. You might pay a ton of money to the cigarette companies, the medical system, and the government, but smokers don't even come close to paying for their damages. What is the value of a grandmother to a grandchild? Did the grandchild get any of that considerable cash that the moron who smoked himself to death spent? What's the value of watching a loved one struggle to breathe sitting in a bed? What is the value of your kid having to move in and take care of you? What is the value of having to carry an otherwise healthy persons bedpan because they can't get up and make it to the bathroom? What is the value of holding your parent while they gasp and cry about how stupid it was to continue smoking when they knew what could happen? Did you pay all that money in? I will tell you, you didn't. Wake up you have a selfish habit that could kill you and wreak havoc in your family's life. Only an addicted selfish person continues that behavior.

Yes, life is full of risks, but only a complete idiot dances in a minefield and smugly tries to convince others that it is wise. But addiction does that kind of thing.

Oh I still don't believe that cigarette taxes pay for their costs. At least not with the bills I have seen.
