Yet again an informative discussion.
Thanks for the ping.

"Look at the map."
As I understand it, one could travel from Greece to Siberia speaking Turkish the whole way.

What you say about Iran and Turkey makes sense. Post-mullah sounds good!
As for Europe being a dwarf and a midget, Europe is determined on that fate economically regardless of what the U.S. wants. A socialist nation is on the way to becoming a totalitarian nation, so it's good that European socialist countries are military midgets.

I am glad that some Turks are seeing what the problem is with the EU. Hopefully they'll knock some sense into the rest of them. I just hope Bush backs off the EU.

Turkey is probably better off without the EU (also known as the Revised Roman Empire by some folks).
To: weikel
Yes. Turkey has been supporting them for years. They had set up a secular government in Mazar-i Sharif before General Dostum was betrayed by one of his commanders an forced to flee a few years ago. Turkey has opened a cosulate and a couple of secular schools in the city before Taliban overrun Dostum with the help of the ISI (Pakistani Intelligence). Unfortunately, back then, the Taliban were not seen as a threat by the US. We saw this mess coming years before 9/11.

Well the people behind the Taliban are in Saudi Arabia( the ISI went along because they thought it hurt India but I blame the Sauds...).

Perhaps if the Bush Administration made a point to underscore their use of former military in various appointments, they could ease the EU's fears that a "people's will" democracy and the occasional extra-constitutional fiat exercised by military-minded leadership are not incompatible in the least.
