There are a few areas in the town that you can still hear English spoken but maybe not for too long. It's starting to look like Guadalajara where the majority of people are Mexican and there's a community of Americans living well enough.

But not too long ago it was much more American and much better off --50 years ago there was a much higher ratio of Americans (Anglo, Hispanic, and Black) to Mexicans:

from http://www.elpasotimes.com/stories/borderland/20020319-183345.shtml

El Paso has gone into an "economic dive" during the past 50 years, the Rev. James Hall, pastor of St. Thomas Aquinas Church and co-chairman of the El Paso Interreligious Sponsoring Organization, told the committee. In 1950, the average El Pasoan earned $104 for every $100 on the national scale, Hall said, and today, the typical El Paso wage has slipped to $57 for every $100 nationally.

Two of every three jobs in El Paso pay less than $10 an hour, which means less than the minimum living wage, Hall said. It's imperative that the public sector lead the way and set a trend for higher wages and benefits, he said.

The country's four poorest metropolitan areas are on the Texas-Mexico border.

"The state must take steps to reverse the negative economic consequences of maintaining a wage rate system for state public works contracts that discriminates on the basis of regional boundaries and prevents segments of the state from sharing in economic prosperity," RodrÌguez told the committee. "In the end, the state pays for its misguided policy through higher public assistance funding to economically depressed communities."

The state last year, for example, funneled $2.1 billion to school districts in the 14 counties touching the border because of low value tax bases in those property poor communities. It cost the state $621,546,714 to help finance public education in El Paso's nine school districts last year.

Yea, if you are from NC I have seen what is going on up there. My wife and I went up to the mountains in western part of the state, and I thought I was in Mexico in some places. And I always thought those mountain folks would never let something like that happen to them. They have always had a healthy suspicion of outsiders until they prove themselves to be good people. What we saw made my wife furious. She is an immigrant from Lebanon herself, and has been told by the INS that it will be another 6 years before she will recieve her green card. She is entirely self sufficient and already loves R. E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson better than I do. lol However, she is an asset to our culture, and therefore subversive to what our masters in DC, NY, the corporate board rooms, Hollywood, and Ivy League campuses have in store for us.

Want a real bitter laugh?

Call the Kali DMV at 1-800-777-0133 to find out why they (and all Kali state offices) will be closed this saturday and monday.

You will not believe it.

Jobs are leaving because the educated workforce is also leaving.

That's true. An educated workforce more than low labor costs seems to be the important factor in whether or not jobs come to an area. The problem with such high immigration from Mexico is that the education and skill levels are now about equal on both sides of the border, and now with NAFTA the jobs for these people are in Mexico, not the US but those NAFTA jobs pay $3 a day and welfare pays much much better so there is still a pull to the US in spite of the jobs leaving.

Let me guess:
1) El Paso
2) Laredo
3) McAllen-Mission
4) Brownsville

GaConfed, I'm from Georgia, myself. I've talked to you. You live in Barnesville, right? I live in southern Cobb County up here in the Atlanta area.

I've heard information like that about the North Carolina mountains. In Georgia's mountain counties, Rabun, Union, and White Counties have had a significant influx. Towns County still hasn't had much of an influx. As far as Lumpkin County, they've also had some illegal Mexican in-migration. If I'm not mistaken, Gilmer County, home to Ellijay, has had the largest influx percentage wise (something like 8% of the population).

As far as North Carolina goes, I'll pass through the western North Carolina mountains at times, but I usually do this to head to Cherokee, NC, or the eastern Tennessee mountainous areas of Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge. There are some places in east central North Carolina that have seen some significant illegal in-migration.

The American Southwest is going to be "Big Kosovo" in 20 years, with Mexicans as our Albanians.

And if we're lucky, that global court will be in full working order to try all of us for defending our homeland, by then.

Towns County, if you'll remember, is somewhat wealthier than the other mountain counties. It's home to Hiawassee, Young Harris, and the other lake Chatuge communities.

The big difference in this migration, however, is that we are subsidizing it. They know that if they can get here, they'll have it made! What kind of stupidity is this?

Exactly right. If "Anglo" police hurt anyone chasing Aztlan terrorists into the barrio after they blow up the police station, the "Anglo" cops will be charged with hate crimes, genocide etc.

Well, in a sense the Romans did the same thing by giving them the land to settle on. They were able to do it because Italy proper was losing population because the birth rate of the core Roman people was going down (another similarity to our situation today). Eventually, the barberians outnumbered the Romans and just took over. It's our job to prevent this even if it means going against our government at some point in the future. It gives me no great pleasure in saying that BTW.

I remember you now. And yes, I've seen Rabun County close up and personel also. My parents own land there. Amazing that Clayton now has a double wide barrio. But Gainesville and Dalton are worse.

Also, Towns County is home to Zell Miller. Don't think he is going to let his turf get taken over no matter how he votes in the Senate.

Yes, I should have mentioned the point about Zell Miller.

Yep, Gainesville and Dalton are quickly becoming little versions of Mexico.
