Ok, my take on it. They are a good resource, can do wonerful things. BUT one can easily tell where this will go. Just like today it is hard to get by without a bank account (try cashing a check on a regular basis without one, not impossible of course). Cash will either go by way or be dicouraged and not trusted. I started looking into this years ago from a tech viewpoint (they mainly use Java). Has a lot of good applications for security, tracking government spending, and so fourth. But like anything else when put into the hands of power hungry people like the demon-rats, et al, it will slowly push forth it's tentacles into every aspect of life.
It will be used more and more for more health/safety issues - you bought 1000 rounds of ammo? Stocking up on certain foods and buying survivalist books? Buying or viewing porn (they use them to log into computers along with passwords, they have home systems for this already - look for a pc coming soon to a store near you with one built in). I won't go into all the excuses they will use to be allowed to view the data it collects (if it can help find one abducted child, it is worth it...etc).
At any rate, just interesting to watch an industry unfold - their sites show where they are going and when, goals set, etc. Enjoy.

Here is an excerpt from Mondex:
Mondex Korea signed an agreement with the Kyonggi Provincial Government of South Korea to use the Mondex electronic cash card. Citizens of the province will be using smart cards for multiple services such as payment, medical records and ID.
