Sir, you criticized me, indeed insulted me, and all of my colleagues here, as I explained in my first e-mail to you. Perhaps you might want to re-read it.
You seem awfully touchy. You think the word "bigot" stills your speech, do you? You find "blasphemy" similarly upsetting. Well, what about "nigger"? "jewboy"? "bitch"? "the only good Indian is a dead Indian"? "faggot"? "tree-hugger"?
I would guess that you are a white male, who is not used to being treated as though he were "lower class," "lazy," "stupid," a nonentity, someone irrelevant to the discussion. White males are the first group to claim that there is no such thing as "hate speech," that all opinions are equal neutral and only words, that free speech protects the right of the powerful verbally to abuse the disempowered.
But when "diversity training" appears, directed at bigots, why, white males all of a sudden leap out of the woodwork calling "foul." You have pretty thin skin when it comes to what you consider "verbal abuse" of you, don't you?

I would suggest what I thought obvious. My original e-mail was addressed to someone other than yourself.
However, the fact that I sent a copy to you ought obviously to imply that I have no problem with you either reading or responding (and I appreciate you doing both).
The only reason for noting that it was not addressed to you was to wonder at the acerbic tone of your reply, since no criticism of you was implicit in my first. I had thought a response from the academy would be, well, more academic in tone.
However, I will make one observation on your last -- I note the frequent descriptive term "bigot" and its cognates. I wonder if a previous generation of university administrators might use a different term to the same effect -- "blasphemy." In the past, dissenting opinions were "blasphemous" but now they are "bigoted." Both terms are rather effective labels to stifle the expression of the undesired opinion.
Please don't take my lame attempts at sophistry too seriously. I'm sure, in the final analysis that they are merely the rantings of a fool who wishes he were worthy of office, title and robes. I suppose that it was my initial blaspheme that called forth your almost abusive first response.
Please forgive my blaspheme. I wonder if verbal abuse is still a sin in the academy.
