Wouldn't surprise me. This epidemic was predictably peaking at the peak of hysteria in the mid-90's. The virus was destined to die out as the people who spread it the most died and stopped spreading it. The medical and political establishments had little effect on that curve.

Context is important: the article stated that the above was "suspicion" amongst some, not a statement of fact.

I've heard the claim that AIDS is considered by some homosexuals as a "badge of honor" by both pro and anti homosexual sources and I've seen it touted on FR as an example of their "sick lifestyle" but I've never seen any solid evidence that it's really the case, never seen any actual quotes from any people who hold such a view. I suspect that it's an urban legend or that those who do hold such views are in a far smaller minority than reports would have you believe.

Engaging in promiscious sex, especially without protection, is downright stupid but I suspect that it is fueled by an ignorantly self-destructive "it's not going to happen to me" mentality rather than a deliberately self-destructive "I hope I get it" one.

You Americans are behind (?) in your sexual education. Here in the UK we don't have Sexually Transmitted DISEASES (STD) anymore, (that's official) we have Sexually Transmitted INFECTIONS (STI). Infection is something you take a pill and hey presto! the golden bullet works, Disease is suppurating sores, chancres, lumps, bumps,weight loss,sunken cheeks (?).

You know, I'm not sure whether I'd consider a "disease" or an "infection" worse. An infection is something that I associate with being careless or reckless (like not treating a wound properly) and can lead to server consequences (like gangrene), while I could get a disease just by being exposed to a virus or bacteria while out in public.

Personally I'd not want either.

You won't hear as much about homosexuals who don't engage in such behaviours because they're not suffering any associated negative consequences and as such are not as newsworthy.
