Well, I think Gov. Bush does stick to a conservative philosophy (lower taxes, One Florida, smaller government, etc.), but I also think he is very forward in his thinking, in terms of recognizing and embracing technology, planning for growth, etc. A lot of things that the word "progressive" would describe if that word didn't already mean "liberal" -- because he truly stays on top of issues and has a vision for the future. And, I really like that about him. :)

re your post #240 - SonnyM was asking the same question on another thread. People generally said: Yes, Jeb is more conservative. (But, again, I think there is much more to him than that; no offense to conservatives -- and, what I am pointing out does not take away from his conservative philosophy.)

I agree....being progressive in the sense of supporting technology and planning for growth is not anti-conservative. In fact, I think it is a great aspect of conservatism.

Former Florida resident, Jeb, and patriotic, flag-flying American veteran BUMP!

Summer, thanks for your great work. It's much appreciated!

Some people here think either Jeb Bush / Condi Rice, or Condi Rice / Jeb Bush, is the winning GOP ticket for 2008.

I like it! That dynamic duo would send millions of libs into vapor lock - just one more reason to go Rice/Bush in 2008!

Governor blasts homeowners association

Staff and wire reports
Posted June 15 2002

JUPITER · Gov. Jeb Bush celebrated Flag Day on Friday blasting the "stupid-rule mentality" of the homeowners association that has a man on the brink of losing his home because he insisted on flying an American flag from a 12-foot pole in his front yard.

George Andres, a Marine stationed in the Pacific from 1956-1962, owes almost $30,000 in fines to his homeowners association. He violated association policy and a court order when he raised his flag from a pole instead of permissible brackets attached to the house.

With the national anthem playing in the background, Bush gave Andres a flag that flew over the state capitol and helped him raise it on the pole amid applause from a crowd of neighbors.

"Rather than just say it's unacceptable, people ought to put aside their differences and their obsession with rules and regulations and use common sense to make decisions," Bush said.

Bush signed legislation in April making it clear that people can fly American flags "in a respectful manner" regardless of homeowners association rules, as long as they're on portable, removable poles.

A judge ordered Andres last June to pay $100 for each day the pole was planted outside his house since she ordered him to take it down in October 2000. Bush presented Andres a check for $100 on Friday as a symbolic gesture.

Andres owes the homeowners association $7,400 in fines for more than two months of noncompliance. He owes the association more than $21,000 for legal fees accumulated during his three-year battle with the group. Andres could have faced up to 90 days in jail for contempt of court.

He said he'll keep flying his flag, particularly now.

"I think it's absolutely fabulous," Andres said. "How many times have you seen the governor come to somebody's house to do something like this?"

The Indian Creek Phase 3B Homeowners Association permits flags flown only from wall brackets attached to the homes. But Andres, a retired electrician, said he has a constitutional right to fly the flag from the pole.

Andres on Friday was fresh from a round in court.

On Wednesday, Circuit Court Judge Edward Fine rejected a motion by West Palm Beach attorney Steven Selz, representing the association, to name a receiver for the Andres home, on which the association has filed foreclosure proceedings.

"The court is not in the property rental business," Fine said.

Selz sought to have Fine name an individual to collect rent from the Andreses, with that money going to pay fines.

Andres' Boca Raton attorney, Barry Silver, said the association has blocked three bank accounts held by the Andreses, including one for money donated to pay Andres' legal fees.

In addition, Andres' Social Security checks are being seized. "Simply outrageous," Silver said.

Jill Barton of The Associated Press and Randall Murray of The Jupiter Courier contributed to this report.

Thanks. Much better article than in the Palm Beach Post which had to mention in the lead that this is an election year and Jeb could not pass up a good photo op.
