And my wife thinks I'm paranoid when I have to have my 11 year-old daughter within eyesite at all times. The few times she is allowed to walk down our street, she must have our Boxer on a leash.

"...allowing a 13 year old to roam the malls unattended is just asking for trouble."

Maybe, but it is done all the time. Parents no longer parent their kids. Kids have mobility, money, and freedom to do whatever they want, whenever they want.

Thanks for the great example. My little one is 18 months old now and I'm already planning such things as computer placement and rules.

I'm a firm believer that with all the temptation out on the net these days no one should use the computer without others being able to see what they are doing. Keeps everyone accountable.

God Save America (Please)

That goes for everyone in the house. Good rule.

In the 1930's my mother and her two sisters, all under the age of 13 were permitted to take the subway from Brooklyn to Coney Island all by themselves, which was not at all unusual. Back then there was little danger to them.

People like to blame poverty for societies ills, but back then the depression brought widespread poverty to New York City.

I blame hypertolerance, every piece of trash has "rights" and for every crime there is a social worker with an "excuse" and for every cop who uses his baton judiciously there is an Al Sharpton shouting "no peace no justice".

"Girls are not this precocious this young unless they've been molested all of their lives."

"Precocious" would appear to be only part of the problem.....I think "cunning" and "manipulative" would probably also fit. It seems that this girl was indeed living a double life. Publicly, she was a freshfaced cheerleader/altar girl who seemed to go out of her way to present herself (successfully) as a "nice girl." Privately, she was hosting a website where she entertained men with her "dead sexy self."

This child was placed in the custody of an aunt and enrolled in a private Catholic school in the middle of a school year. Perhaps I am wrong, but this smacks of an attempt to correct some type of behavioral problem. Unfortunately, it sounds as though the aunt was poorly equipped to deal with a child who was so skilled at pulling the wool over the eyes of others. In fact, it sounds as if most of the people in her life were poorly equipped to deal with her. That "nice girl" image didn't happen by accident......I believe it was part of a game that this girl was very good at playing.

Actually, it is a very safe neighborhood. I just hear too many stories. I was raised on Air Force bases where a kid could wonder around all day and not be in the slightest danger of this sort of thing. But, here in the real world, the type of neighborhood one lives in does not seem to matter much.

Christina Long, 13, a popular student at St. Peter Catholic School in Danbury, disappeared Friday after her aunt, Shelly Reilly, dropped her off at about 5:45 p.m. at the Danbury Fair Mall.

Sorry folks. This has nothing to do with computers. This is an isuue of irresponsible parents. Leaving a 13 year old at a mall unsupervised is negligence.

Because they're here ILLEGALLY, they should all be sent home.

How do you propose identifying these individuals without a draconian affront to the personal liberties and privacy rights of us all?

"Something about this story is weird."

You got that one right! Did you notice that she's in the 6th grade but she's 13 years old? I was starting the 8th grade when I turned 13. So how is it that the principal of her school brags about what a great student this kid was when she was actually 2 years behind in her studies?

My guess is that she was already thoroughly ruined after the 10 or 11 years her junkie parents had custody of her. By the time her well-meaning but clueless aunt got custody, her fate was already sealed.

Thirteen years old? I would like to think that I was more literate, even at that age. But, that is the public school system.

Teens, these days, grow up fast. By the time they are thirteen, they have the freedom to do whatever they wish. No one even tries to control them. It seems as though parents do not care about their children the way that they did a few years ago. It is almost as though the kids are expendible. It seems to me that if people go through the problems of rearing a child, they would try to look out for it more than they do.

"The was a time when a conservative editor would have nixed the mention of this guy's illegal status as not being germane to the story. "

There is no reason to hide it.
