I just posted the following on another thread but I thought it might be of interest to some on this thread.
------------------

Many of you might be surprised to learn that a Cabinet level position was the intent long before September 11. The US Commission on National Security/21 Century recommended it over a year ago.

See this article

Here is a link to the Commission's homepage. http://www.nssg.gov I believe the Cabinet level position is recommended in the third report.

Also, some of you might find my recent post on the Commission of interest. It is here. Post #52 (second one down).

It was an excellent speech. It wasn't the dramatic speech after 9/11, but we may not see one like that for another 50 years.

Reorganizing our government makes a lot of a sense. In the private sector, I'm used to seeing it every five years or so, and sometimes more often than that. We have to adapt to changing conditions.

He'll get it from Congress. He made it politically impossible to oppose him. And it will be a good thing.

And something dawned on me about this new merging of organizations from different agencies. Clinton left a lot of Senior Executive Service (SES) positions filled in supervisory positions in the various agencies. This reorganization should do away with a lot of those positions and thus a lot of clintonites will be able to spend "More Time With Their Family!" Kind of a nice side outcome of this Reorganization!

"...this new department will review intelligence and law enforcement information from all agencies of government, and produce a single daily picture of threats against our homeland. Analysts will be responsible for imagining the worst, and planning to counter it.

The staff of this new department will be largely drawn from the agencies we are combining. By ending duplication and overlap, we will spend less on overhead, and more on protecting America..."

Exactly what I suggested would happen the other night on fr. Not to pat myself, but to make note; it is common sense what he is doing in running the Country. Maybe that's why so many of his trash-talkers on FR don't get it; no common sense of how things work, and no understanding of Bush and how he operates. Oh well.

This is the Senate ping list which evolved from my Bush/Cheney ping list. Please write your Reps/Senators and tell them to support the President on Homeland Security.

I remember reading that and thinking that you had nailed it -- common sense is a rare commodity on here lately!

Clinton/Gore/Cliton/Reno screwed out Govt up so bad, it won't be fixed overnight and Bush has a huge task, on top of dealing with the War on Terrorism. Those that B&M (biatch and moan) about him, well....maybe they really want it the way Clinton had it....

It's really difficult to exercise common sense when a person is constantly hostile, pessimistic (as opposed to realistic) suspicious, and overly cynical.

Yet we are a different nation today -- sadder and stronger, less innocent and more courageous, more appreciative of life, and for many who serve our country, more willing to risk life in a great cause. For those who have lost family and friends, the pain will never go away -- and neither will the responsibilities that day thrust upon all of us. America is leading the civilized world in a titanic struggle against terror. Freedom and fear are at war -- and freedom is winning

This was wonderful, and even greater to read the text! thanks

The reason to create this department is not to create the size of government, but to increase its focus and effectiveness. The staff of this new department will be largely drawn from the agencies we are combining. By ending duplication and overlap, we will spend less on overhead, and more on protecting America. This reorganization will give the good people of our government their best opportunity to succeed by organizing our resources in a way that is thorough and unified.

Well, so much for that idiotic "biggest expansion of government since Truman" thread.

Hi, there. I thought the speech was excellent, both in delivery and in content. President Bush has gravitas and it shows - along with kindness and intelligence.

He has so much on his plate, as VP Cheney said - this President has no time for the silly stupidities that we have seen on this forum recently or from the Demoncreeps or from the likes of Rush and others.

No, he is not perfect. But, I am very happy he is the President and very happy that Cheney is the VP also.

By the way, invoking Truman's name a couple of times was brilliant. It does no damage but helps to soften up the FDR Democrat oldster vote. Smart.
