I think the most chilling oversight in this article, is the fact that Iraq is probably much further along in the WMD department and Bush has all the gory details. Too bad Matthews choses not to examine that aspect, and at least give some sense of realism to his "piece". All the mainstream press wants to ignore that little fact, because its too scary, I would guess. And some day in the not too distant future, all our nuclear secrets are going to fly home too at great cost. Don't forget China. The Clinton malfeasance is not played out.

Dear Chris: I wish you had been on top of the WTC at 0830 on Sept. 11, 2001.
Maybe you would consider differently.
To: okiedust
Absolutely!
And how erie that you should mention "china" here.
Take a look at: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/698114/posts?page=10#10 that I posted not 3 minutes ago -- and see if you are not spot on!

and there is the DMZ in Korea that U.S. soldiers continually monitor
Not only that but if you are stationed there you get combat pay..and for a very good reason.

A very, very good response. Here is an early morning bump for you.

Well, I have thought that while the doctrine of preemption will give us cover to go after Saddam, it is also a big warning to our enemies who are waiting for their own time to strike. (China). It changes the rules from predictable to uncertain, and that's always an advantage. Right now, everything is in play, and that is what is so stupid about the Matthews screed. Really stupid. I'm replying to your post on the other thread as well as this one. Thanks.

Who is this guy, Napoleon? Who is this Matthews, Chamberlin?
I noticed a Reuters story on the arrest yesterday in which they referred to Osama Bin Laden as a "dissident." Our media will apparently be unable to see truth until the shockwave from the nuke hits. Of course, then it will be too late.
To: JohnHuang2
JH2, when will you finally get your own show and columns? You are certainly leagues above every lefty in the media, and usually ahead of most of the sharper minds out there.
You've already got a guaranteed base of 100,000+ (FReepers plus family members) on your first day, without any advertising. =^)
To: JohnHuang2
the shriek host of Hardball I'm being totally superficial here but I can't tolerate the man's voice and delivery. Your words said it all for me.
Another great Two cents dissection of a fool and his illogical spew.

"Well, I have thought that while the doctrine of preemption will give us cover to go after Saddam, it is also a big warning to our enemies who are waiting for their own time to strike. (China). "Interesting new rules of engagement for the future. The old era of the good-guy cowboy letting the bad guy go for his gun first is gone. Now anyone can shoot first. At the rate we have made enemies since Bush, the elder left, we sure have our work cut out for us.

Part of the work, is letting the bad guys know you mean business. It is not that you want to go around the world shooting everyone who makes a false move, that is stupid, wasteful, and not in our best interests. You remember that China challenged Bush right out of the box with the surveillance plane issue? A test. Most of these terrorists need the cover of the nation states that hide them to do their work, but few of the states are Iraq, with a terrorist thug, madman leader that is so open about it. They are thugs and madmen maybe, but they do wish to continue to survive, and this doctrine is for them.
The little game of two face, while useful for these folks, will ultimately have consequences, for them that could destablse their little thugocracies and end them. It is a doctrine I think of careful destabilisation and carefully measured consequences, that one must be willing to employ. It certainly requires a lot of nerve and careful manipulation, but it seems like it could be useful. It is easy to look at the obvious cause and effect equation, but I think there is more to it than that. It is a long term strategy, built on a willingness to act, which will effect changes within countries that obviate the need to act, at least in some cases, and that saves us the job of doing it ourselves.
This is a new type of war, and I think it is much more reliant on threat and psyop that numbers of troops and shots fired.

Beautifully written John.

"Weapons of mass destruction? Ha! Saddam'll never use 'em. (Fact: He already has. In '88, when he gassed thousands of Kurds.)"
Straw man. The relevant question of course is whether he will use them against us.
