Seattle Church Council: All Whites Are Racists (My title)
The Seattle Times | September 8, 2001 | Florangela Davila

Posted on 09/10/2001 12:22:10 PM PDT by Steve_Seattle

A first step in dismantling racism is to admit that it lurks even in "civil Seattle," even among the "good folks here," more than a dozen religious leaders said yesterday in announcing a yearlong agenda to address racism.

"The racism we live with is part of us," said the Rev. Boyd Stockdale, who is white. "It is not possible for me, in my culture, to say, 'I am not racist.'"

Stockdale and 14 others from a variety of denominations launched the "Year of Action Against Racism and White Privilege in the Northwest," a series of teach-ins, speakers, film and book discussions, and training organized by the Commission on Racial Justice of the Church Council of Greater Seattle.

The program is expected to culminate in a one-day conference a year from now.

"It is the church's obligation to lead the battle," said Paula Harris-White, the commission chairwoman. "Racism is clearly a sin," added the Rev. Jack Sullivan. "The time has come for the faith community to break its allegiance to the status quo and enter the glorious morning of anti-racist action."

The program will address issues such as reparations, Native American rights, and "white privilege" - how whites have inherent advantages over nonwhites. "We're on to something," Sullivan concluded.

Oh how these people miss the sixties - teach-ins, speakers, rallies. Racism will not be overcome by conferences and speeches conducted by self-important morons, or by pastors beating their breasts and proclaiming themselves and every other white person to be racists. Racism is overcome by the interactions of ordinary people on a daily basis. For every hate crime, there are a hundred interracial marriages, but these church folks only want to talk about the hate crime, not the innumerable ways in which people of all races interact respectfully as they go about their daily business.

I agree Steve. It takes a change of heart, through a relationship with Jesus Christ, to change racism and every other "ism" there is. Conferences aren't going to do it. Look at the Durban conference. Wasn't THAT a great success. Everyone has his or her agenda to embrace and it just doesn't work.

Dead on, Steve. Exactly right. A heads-up for everybody else as well: The Church Council of Greater Seattle is an openly socalist political PAC. It is not a "religious" organization as the name might imply.

Why stop being racist if it's impossible?

Oops! I meant to say: Why try to stop being racist when it's impossible to stop being racist?

Year of Action Against Racism and White Privilege in the Northwest

You can tell a lot about any effort by the parameters going in.  Spending a quarter on this percieved problem would be one thing, a year?  Sorry, no sale.  It's going to address reparations.  You can guess where that will wind up.  Noting that the leadership percieves a "White Privilege" going in, I wouldn't be at all surprised if individual church members are urged to divest themselves of some of their wealth as the Christian thing to do.

This nation needs a war.  I know that sounds like a terrible thing to say.  But when this nation attains peace and has no real problems, it's citizenry is free to let their minds wander seeking first one then another imagined ill to remedy.  Whether it's environmentalism gone bonkers or racism conferences gone postal, this nation's citizens have proven that they can't manage their lives under peaceful conditions.  Focus grasshopper, focus...

At the present time we have numberous national group psychosis (not sure if this is the proper term) in full bloom, of which this effort by the churches is only one.

In other words, garbage in, garbage out.

Why now? It didn't work in the 60's. Or the 70's. Or the 80's. Or the 90's. Or last week. Hippies won't go to war. Ecofreaks won't go to war. Socialists, communists, facists won't go to war. So which minds are you trying to change with your little war?

I would agree to that, but a vast majority of churches are members of the World Council of Churches. As such they often adopt some of the more detrimental policies of the WCOC. They also send fund to the WCOC as I understand it. I would advise all churches to withdraw any association with the WCOC.

I would. Rich liberals rarely point the finger at themselves or volunteer to divest themselves of their wealth, except as a tax thing. Now, urging other white folks to divest themselves, that they can do!

Are you saying that environmentalism today is no worse than it's ever been? If so I'd like to introduce to you people at Klamath Falls, people near the Apalachian (sp?) Trail and other places all over this nation. Land is being gobbled up at an incredible rate by literally thousands of conservancies you can tap into on the internet.

My little war would give these pinheads something else to think about, but if you can come up with a better plan, post it. I'm willing to listen.

Actually that is the current war for the zeitgeist and it is changing hearts and minds as more and more people get squished like bugs at the feet of Leviathan. Unfortunately, we're still losing because of the continuing and deliberate degradation in government funded education and the media war on intellect, education, morals, and individual responsiblity.

I had thought you meant a real war on foreign soil (as in the Balkans).

No, actually you were justified in going after my tongue in cheek comment on us needing a war to take people's minds off the vacant "stuff" their going overboard on.  But I do see environmentalism and the other items you mentioned at almost if not at actual crisis stages.  The environmentalist front simply cannot be allowed to continue to expand or even continue it's current efforts.  Talk about non sustainable!

I'm at a loss to explain the thought processes that allows one human to chose sucker fish over other humans.  I'm also at a loss to understand Department of the Interior personnel that alter the course of the Appalachian Trail, then confiscate land is if it were nothing more than a cigarette butt.  These people need psychological treatment.

The premise is that any disparity between blacks and whites is due to racism. If you question that premise, you are implying that there may be another cause such as IQ or things of that sort for the disparity.(It can never be anything related to the actions of the black person) So, if you do not admit that you are a racist, then you ARE a racist. Once people stop letting being called a racist be the worst thing that anyone can be called, this BS will go away.

I could tender some advice to "Stocksie" - if you are indeed a Christian,or if you want an evangelists pronunciation; a "Chrustian", then take heed. I havnt time to research, but the Idaho writer, Vardis Fisher, mentioned in one of his books, a man in Chicago. This man gave up everything he had and then flung himself on the mercy of who ever believed in Jesus. He lived in garages, he wore robes(circa 1930's) and attracted a following. Ok, Rev. follow the tenets of, well, you know of whom I speak (not the Chicago gentleman). Give up all your worldly possessions to racial minorities. When you have done that, fling yourself on the bounty of the same minorities. You won't do it Rev?. What an opportunity faces you and others like you, but I will not hold my breath.

Perceptive analysis.

As a society, we seem unable to mind our own business, tending to our own individual lives and responsibilities. We'd rather mount a movement to clean up the neighbor's front yard, than mow our own backyard.

Wonder what would happen if a flu bug like the "Spanish flu" hit this country. Would we pull together or fly apart at the seams?
