They probably flew by landmarks mainly; bright sunny day across the N.E.
Which may explain why they circled the Pentagon, looking for the Whitehouse

Wow! From the little MapQuest thing (I don't know that area at all) the one flight looks as if it followed I-90 to I-87.

They probably flew by landmarks mainly; bright sunny day across the N.E. Basic instrument navigation taught to beginning students was probably used. Flight paths are not always near major highways.
