Jai Hind! Good for India! IMHO, our nation should start moving away from the Taliban-supporting-and-financing "Islamic Republic of Pakistan" and towards greater ties with India, not simply as a bulwark against Islamic extremism (and they've had centuries of experience of Islamic extremism in India), but because India will very soon be the most populous nation on earth, ahead of China, with nuclear weapons and a missile system named "AGNI" after the Vedic Fire-god, and as such will be a splendid democratic counterweight to Chinese hegemonic ambitions in Asia.

India is a good friend of the U.S., and this friendship should be maximized. We get nothing but crap from our supposed "friends" in the middle east (see singing Palestinian children and celebrating Egyptians). They are good and decent people that can be counted on when the time comes.

Very well stated. India is unique in its strategic importance to the United States.

Sure, India will help us, as long as it is in their national interests to do so. And we should accept their help, if we need it. But no one should be under the illusion that they are our "friends."
Lots of countries will offering to "help" us. We must be careful to make sure whatever we do is in OUR best interests. If the national interests of other countries coincide with ours, then great. But we should be also alert to the possibility that others may try to manipulate and exploit the situation for their own benefit.

India is a good friend of the U.S. When did that happen? Throughout the cold war they consistently backed the Soviets. That's how we got involved with the Paks - as a counterbalance to the Indians (and Soviets) in that part of the world.

When did that happen? Throughout the cold war they consistently backed the Soviets. That's how we got involved with the Paks - as a counterbalance to the Indians (and Soviets) in that part of the world.1) When the Cold War with the no longer extant Soviet Union ended; 2) When Pakistan became a haven for Islamic extremists; 3) When the socialistic, commie-luvin' Congress Party got voted out a few years ago (India is a fellow democracy, Pakistan is one in name only); 4) When it became clear to the United States recently that it might be in our best interests to have a democratic counterweight to Chinese aggressive designs in Asia.
Take your pick.

True, India was not alway our friend. But because of recent events (USSR downfall, Islamic terrorism, China's increasing hegemonic activities), we both now have common interests (Japan and Germany were not our friends once apon a time either). Although its best to be realistic, its also safe to say that, from India's viewpoint, the West is a better "potential" friend than the Islamic world and China, their only other options. And along with the Russians, they are finding out that there are worse people in the world than those of us in the West; much worse........

About being friends.. the Indian foreign minister was pretty honest about this recently. He said nations have permanent interests, no permanent allies. Right now, Indian and American interests vis-a-vis Islamists coincide, thus we are allies. We won't be forever.

the Indian foreign minister was pretty honest about this recently. He said nations have permanent interests, no permanent alliesFernandes was simply paraphrasing the 19th Century British Prime Minister Lord Palmerston: "England has no permanent allies---she has only permanent interests." That goes for the US, too.
