I paused this morning, turned off the television, and read from my history books the words of great leaders of the past that inspired other generations to hold fast to the gift of liberty. May their voices continue to inspire us today.
Winston Churchill stated on May 13, 1940:
"We are in the preliminary phase of one of the greatest battles in history ... I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears, and sweat. We have before us an ordeal of the most grievous kind. We have before us many, many months of struggle and suffering.
"You ask, what is our aim? I can answer in one word. It is victory. Victory at all costs - Victory in spite of all terrors - Victory, however long and hard the road may be, for without victory there is no survival."
On December 7, 1941, President Roosevelt concluded in his " a date which will live in infamy" address:
"Our people, our territory and our interests are in grave danger. With confidence in our armed forces, with the unbounding determination of our people, we will gain the inevitable triumph. So help us God."
President John F. Kennedy stated in his Inaugural Address, January 20, 1961:
"The same revolutionary beliefs for which our forebears fought are still at issue around the globe - The belief that the rights of man come not from the generosity of the state but from the hand of God ...
Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, in order to assure the survival and the success of liberty."
