Freeper Historians?

Posted on 09/23/2001 9:52:28 PM PDT by flying Elvis

Greetings, Are there any Freeper historians here? I am working toward an advanced degree in American History and wonder if anyone else here is in that field? As you well know, conservative historians in academia are rare and it would be nice if we could offer one another support.

Ciao,

Flying E

Hehe. I wish. Actually, I thought it would be nice if we Freeper historians formed an informal group. We could keep one another apprised of job openings, conferences, and current publications of interest. That is all secondary, however, to lending support to one another in the battles we wage on campus in defence of our values. Academia is a cold world for conservatives.

My campus is an hour away from the King's birthplace. : )

I only have a BA in History, but have continued studies in the field since obtaining my degree.

I think there may be one or two with academic positions, Len Schweikert (?sp) comes to mind, but more of us with advanced degrees who have gone into other fields, in part because academia is so hostile to anyone to the right of the Gang of Four. The liberal arts and social sciences (other than economics) are filled with leftists. When I did doctoral work in intellectual history of modern Europe in the early '70s, every one of the well-known men I studied with were at least very liberal or socialist (save one Southerner in philosophy of history who could best be characterized as a classical liberal). Even then, one had to be very careful about letting one's politics show, even in one's choice of work.

Your basic assumption should be that you are getting an advanced degree in history because it amuses you accoding to your taste (ala H.L. Mencken), not because you think you might get a job teaching history at other than the secondary school level.
