KIEV, Sept 24 (AFP) - The former Soviet republic of Ukraine on Monday offered its airspace for use by US transport military aircraft during a possible campaign to retaliate for the September 11 attacks, the head of the security council said Monday.

Evhen Marchuk, quoted by national television, said President Leonid Kuchma was to sign a decree very shortly on allowing the use of the airspace.

Good to hear this. My wife is from the Ukraine and she loves America. She and her parents are some of the finest Christian people I have ever known.

I certainly hope we asked Putin for permission first, so as to serve the adolescent fantasies of the Russian ruling clique that the Soviet Union still exists.

There are not a whole lot of warm cuddlies between Russia and the Ukraine. While I doubt that the deal wasn't done with an understanding between Bush and Putin, I likewise don't doubt that the Ukrainians would turn down an opportunity to demonstrate their independence to Russia.
