The RCMP said yesterday they will look into the disappearance of four people from a Montreal apartment, days before the Sept. 11 attacks on New York and the Pentagon, according to a news report.
The French-language network RDI reported yesterday that verses from the Koran were scribbled on the downtown apartment's walls, mirrors and a television screen. One verse read:
"The truth has arrived and lies have been vanquished."
During a search conducted the day after the attacks, police also found a list of Quebec courthouses, RDI said.
The network said a Quebec woman had been a tenant in the apartment for the past two years, and lived with three men described as Arab in origin. Their names did not appear on the lease, RDI said.
All four disappeared a few days before jet attacks destroyed the World Trade Centre and damaged the Pentagon.
RCMP Constable Marcel Campbell said the RCMP have not conducted any investigations to date, but would look into the reports today.
The tenant's brother, who did not want to be identified, said that the three men living with his sister had forbidden him to see her before her disappearance, RDI said.
"I spoke to those guys often and there was something not right about them," said the brother, who did not give the men's names. "They smiled all the time."
Reports also suggest that Mouhamedou Ould Slahi, a man with links to Canada who is under arrest in the U.S., might have helped finance the terrorist operation.
The Mauritanian man, who traveled to Montreal and had been watched by the Canadian Security Intelligence Service, was detained on Sunday. Slahi is suspected of links to Osama bin Laden, the prime suspect in the attacks.
