Officials: Tests Show Presence of Anthrax in Second Florida Man

By Amanda Riddle Associated Press Writer

Published: Oct 8, 2001

BOCA RATON, Fla. (AP) - Preliminary tests show the presence of anthrax in a second Florida man, but it was not yet clear if he has a full-blown case of the disease that killed one of his co-workers last week, officials said early Monday. A nasal swab from the man, whose name was not immediately made public, tested positive for the bacteria that causes anthrax, said Tim O'Conner, regional spokesman for the Florida Department of Health. LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION - What is the relation of this site to the Atta-airport, or any of the other terrorists?

The second case is a co-worker of the original .... anthrax tested positive for his nasal swabs and for the building. The building in question houses approximately 300+ people for the Sun and the National Enquirer

Don't know exactly where w.r.t. this office, but Steven's home was less than one mile from the air field where Atta rented light planes on four occasions, about ten miles from the where most of terrorists lived, and about forty miles from where the hijacker's inquired about renting a crop duster.

Forget about fixing the world, were talking about just surviving here. We need to PRAY HARD, because I believe that this is only the beginning of terrorist attacks against the USA. Good night fellow freepers, and God bless everyone of you. (including you dbbeebs)

For the record, average college biology students can follow simple xerox instructions, build a "glove box" from a large aquarium, and mass produce anthrax spores from a small sample.

One sample can be grown into twenty glass mason jars full of active spores, which can then be passed out to terrorists in a cell for use against subways and buildings.

The glass jars can be used like "biological hand grenades" against air ducts or simply thrown onto subway tracks, where the trains will pull the air, and the spores, through the system.

The possibility of this type of attack is very real, more at the "boxcutter" level of "K.I.S.S.", as opposed to cropdusters etc.

Yeah but keep in mind how deadly this is.

THis is most likely a Poisson distrbution of exposure meaning that it isn't unusual for someone close (both spacially and temporally) to the initially infected to also be infected. Kind of like busses: the next arriving bus has the highest probability of arriving right after the previous one.

Think about how you get the disease: most likely the first victim got from livestock feces (shoes kicked it up). The same shoes wore worn to work. He has the opportunity to infect everyone he worked with.

I know everyone here wants to panic and I'm throwing cold water on it, but you need to take a step back. A terror attack of 200 pounds of Anthrax would kill 3 million people on the east coast. If this really were an attack thousands would have symptons within the first 3 days, not 2.

No actually it seems like you're smoking crack and denying reality here. Pulmonary anthrax is RARE .....

All of a sudden two cases pop up ?

Expect the case loads to go higher bud. Occam's Razor will cut this argument to pieces and time will tell.

And don't forget, Castro has a strong network in S. Florida, and is known to be working on biowarfare.

It just occurred to me that these cases in Florida may be diversionary. If they are indeed terrorist acts, perhaps the perpetrators wished to divert attention by the CDC towards Florida, while their real target is far away (Los Angeles, perhaps?).

Or, as others have suggested, these cases may have been a real-world test by the terrorists, to see how potent and transmissible their spores were. If only two or three cases appear, the test can be judged a failure, since the terrorists were likely hoping to infect half of the building.

Just my speculation.

I do expect it to go higher, simply because we are looking for it. We found spores in someone temporally and spacially related to an initial victim. Don't cut yourself on the razor. THese are related cases. I would be much more concerned if two totally unrelated cases showed up. It's not even clear that the second person has developed the disease. The disease has a source. They were looking for a source. The fact that they found a source shouldn't be the cause for panic. again, if this were an attack, thousands would be dying from the disease. 200 pounds can kill 3 million people.

The problem is not in growing the amount of anthrax needed; the problem is in properly dispersing it through the entire east coast (or other area). If it rains, or the wind changes direction, or whatever, the stuff doesn't get where it is aimed.
