Washington formed the nation and Lincoln preserved it.

To say nothing of the fact that Lincoln destroyed the constitution.

and what do the Chinese need the oil for... well their HUGE army of course

Well, of course it's actually so they can manufacture all of those items we buy in Wally World.

Which, of course, gives them the money to buy oil companys.

Ain't no easy end to this one.

That photo was an excellent example of why any structure built near an Atlantic or Gulf Coast beach should be considered a temporary structure.

Fortunately, that was an area which is protected seashore, with nothing but some fishing camps on it (Core Banks/Portsmouth Island).

I flew over it a couple of days after the storm. It was major re-arranged.

I live in Beaufort, which is about thirty miles to the southwest. Our 18th century house talked to us a lot, and we were without power, but we only got a little water in the street closest to the waterfront, and no serious damage.

Funny what a few miles can do. All you have to do is be on the west side of those things, and you are usually okay.

And it was only a Category 2 storm at landfall.

We have friends who rode it out on Cedar Island, which is just a bit northwest of where I think that photo was taken. They stook there and watched the water rise above their floor, which was more than eight feet agl.

They said it gave them a new perspective on life.

SS is a pay as you go system. Starting in 2008, the surplus starts declining and in 2018, we start paying out more than we collect.

Yes, and the question is what do we pay the difference with.

But I guess all will be okay. After all, the T-bills are pure paper just as the Dollar is, so all will be well.

    Nothing to worry about.

Fact: According to the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) and the Administration's own Social Security Administration (SSA), Social Security will be solvent and able to deliver guaranteed benefits at least until 2041. Even at that point, Social Security will still be able to pay 70-80% of promised benefits.

Please, for the benefit of those who don't understand, explain where the trust fund is.

Because all of the government explanations assume that the trust fund is solvent.

    If it isn't....

....that is, if it has been spent....

We can't rely on it to pay the benefits......

Unless, of course, we cut the benefits, raise taxes, or speed up the printing presses.

Any of which net out the same....

    ....trouble.

It'll hurt for a while but they'll be better for it in the long run.

This has the potential to make Enron look like a 2-year-old's birthday party.

What's the old saying? "As GM goes, so goes the nation."??

    Fasten your seat belts.

UNC gets all the acclaim anyways; why can't we get a lucky break just this once.

Illinois put a very excellent basketball team on the court this year... either of those two teams obviously had an equal chance to win.

But the UNC team that played last night will probably ultimately be recognized as one of the finest college basketball teams to have ever played the game.

There are six, maybe seven, on that squar who will play in the NBA.

The '82 UNC championship team only had three... Worthy, Perkins... and yes, Jordan.

No offense to anyone, but ...this and two bucks gets you a ride on a subway. Who cares? Who remembers? And what effect does any sports team winning really mean in the grand scheme of life?

I suppose that great sports contests have as much effect on the grand scheme of life as just about anything else we do.

But rather than dwell on that, why not recognize these wonderful kids who worked so hard to get to where they are...

And the fact that the two teams both come from wonderful college programs where the graduation rates are high, and the integrity of the recruiting is almost beyond reproach.

And the fact that millions saw and vicariously participated in what was clearly one of the finest NCAA tournaments in history.

Seems to me there's something of the grand scheme in all of that.

So go back to whatever it was that you were doing before you dropped in.

    We didn't need anyone's help.

We have the largest debt of any nation in the world...

and the balance of payments ain't all that hot, either...

And we're fighting this war that's costing billions and billions.....

Nope, think the day you're talking about is past.

People are normally rewarded in large measure by the amount of risk they are prepared to take.

I've been in business for myself for somewhat longer than the time you've been practicing medicine. I have done well, but always by taking risks in the marketplace. Risks, I might add, that have never been covered by insurance.

So what was your net taxable income last year?

As a practicing physician for 25 years, I truly look forward to retirement. Our society's prevailing victim mentality that physicians are responsible for any bad medical outcome has led me to the point where I actually actively discourage any young person who wishes to practice medicine, including my own children. For those of you who subscribe to the "hate the privileged doctor class warfare mentality", I have this advice: Go Treat Yourselves.

I really think that you have missed the point here.

The poster was mearly trying to point out that sometime we direct our concerns about emotional issues to the wrong places.

Why focus our energy on guns, as opposed to many other far more prevalent causes of death... unless of course there's a political motivation behind it...

    which, of course, there is.

No need to go defensive. No one's after you.

I actually want your party stripped of ballot access.

I think the LP's antics in states such as Washington and Ohio (especially) justifies any legal action to remove that party from election lists.

We are not a democracy, and if the GOP-controlled states have the ability to crush you like a bug, I applaud and encourage their efforts.

(at 9,078' elev, 'the nations's highest airport)

You're close, but Lake County (Leadville - KLXV) is generally considered to be the nation's highest , although with a slightly shorter runway. (9927'MSL, 6400' x 75' as opposed to 9078', 6870' x 100').

Both have instrument approaches, Leadville has an RNAV departure which is most interesting.

Telluride has an MDA of approx. 2500' AGL. The mountains to the west are up to 5,000' above field elevation.

For the uninitiated, those high elevations are more of a problem in the summer than in the winter (density altitude). On a hot day, some planes just won't get in the air there.
