    So you're a liberal?

Nope. But you're still wrong. Guess your world is all black or all white.

I didn't say regularly. I bet 99% have drank alcohol though.

I think you're wrong here, too.

I define frequently as at least 50%.

    I don't.

The trouble with you college professors is that your views go unchallenged by the minds of mush you have control over at college and you begin to believe your own propaganda.

Fortunately, most of my science students had very good unmushy minds and my job was not propagandist. Too bad you have such poor views of college professors.

you're one of those self-righteous shut-in conservatives who never did anything in his life outside the lines

You don't know anything about me, and you are completely wrong on nearly every descriptor. However, I did spend 20+ years as a college faculty member who saw a number of young people ruin their lives because of alcohol or drugs. I drink (legally) regularly, smoked pot (illegally) in the '60s, and have made plenty of mistakes.

If you knew as much as you think about anything, you wouldn't make the comment that 99% of college students drink alcohol regularly; that is too high an estimate. And nowhere near 99% do so illegally.

Plenty of press has been devoted recently to college binge-drinking, and (contrary to your notion) college is where much alcoholism begins. On-the job drinking is a serious problem for employers, and alcoholism contributes to the high proportion of broken homes, automobile fatalities, and other features of (as you put it) "normal lifestyles" of those who began drinking irresponsibly in college.

If alcohol consumption in college is substance abuse, then 99% have a problem.

Illegal underage drinking in public places off campus is one indicator of substance abuse, as well as stupidity. Most college students who drink are able to do so in their housing without putting themselves at risk of arrest as a law violator. I commend you in noting the problem of alcohol consumption among college age students; frequently it is the beginning of tragic alcoholism.

In the cases of the Bush children, it is too bad that whatever drive causes them to satisfy their needs is so strong that it leads to disregard for the obvious unfavorable consequences for their parents.

(1)sorry not buying, I think its a setup

(2)She's just like my oldest sister. She needs help.

Well, Bubba, which is it...a "setup"...or, as you imply in your second post, a druggie getting drugs? Try to improve your logical consistency.

The GW and Jeb Bush daughters all seem to have substance-abuse problems.

MONTERREY, Mexico (Reuters) -- The mosquito-borne West Nile virus has claimed its first victim in Mexico with the death of a 72-year-old man from Coahuila, a state that borders the United States, authorities said Wednesday.

ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) The Centers for Disease Control confirmed the 71-year-old woman's death Friday as the first human fatality in Georgia from the West Nile virus. She died August 11 at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta.

The average age of those infected in IL is 55...so it's not just the old and frail that are getting it like the press was saying. In fact in illinois 46 new cases yesterday alone several teenagers amoung those

Actually, the press reports most recent deaths as:

"A 71-year-old man diagnosed with West Nile virus died Sunday at St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital in Effingham, and a 79-year-old woman from Moultrie County died Thursday, state health officials said." Chicago Sun Times.

Average age means nothing; if the virus kills 70 year olds and teenagers, the average age is 45.

    As of Sept.4:

700+ human cases in USA for 2002

    35 deaths

The West Nile Virus appears to be firmly established in the United States, and researchers expect its continued spread and entrenchment in wildlife populations. Thirty states, as well as the District of Columbia, have already reported dead birds that have tested positive for the virus in 2002. Since 1999, WNV has been detected in 39 states and the District of Columbia.

Health officials emphasize that your risk of contracting West Nile Virus is VERY low, and less than 1% of those who get the virus become seriously ill. Most people who contract the virus experience mild, flu-like symptoms, and probably do not realize that they have been infected. Those most suceptible to the potentially serious effects of the virus are the elderly, the very young, and those with compromised immune systems. West Nile Virus is not transmissible from person to person.

If this is biowar, it is a dismal failure. The bees and in America produce higher mortalities.

And if you don't think this is objective, consider that I'm a native Atlantan and Billy Sherman is considered thereabouts as a "Yank who was careless with matches".

One of the real problems that conservatives have are that they are saddled with you "the law is the law" folks. It is an albatross around their [our] necks, because it frightens a lot of people, myself included. This attitide is the one of the things that drives decent hardworking folks to support democrats rather than republicans.

Congratulations on your sensible posts. This thread illustrates why the Republican party is the "dumb" party and probably will lose the next election. Some folks may feel good about voting their piety, but it doesn't (and ought not to) win elections.

I wonder if there will be any executive changes at MSNBC over the decision to give Phil Donahue a show in the first place? The simplest of demographic studies must have shown tht he had zero potential audience. I think the ranks of MSNBC prgramming executives are filled with liberal ideologues rather than business men for a such a decision to be made at all.

People who make bad decisions in places like MSNBC seldom ever lose their jobs over them. The public is voting with channel changers, and all of the old-time liberal folk are declining in popularity. There's more to watch now on cable and satellite (and the web) and they don't have a captive audience any more. They just don't get it.

I think he'll be in for a big disappointment. If he couldn't get the majority of the Hispanic in Texas in 2000 after being a very popular governor, what are the odds that he'll do any better with Hispanics anywhere else?

Moreover, our area is noticing lots of Mexicans going home due to the Bush economy. If it continues to tank, he may have to set up voting booths in Mexico if he wants their votes.

Police State is when the cops act without fear of prosecution for their crimes. I'd say we have one.

Agreed...just like Russia has. I have known for a long time that if the cops weren't the cops, they'd be the criminals. Generally they're not very bright, they swagger, intimidate, and bully with their authority, and they are highly susciptible to bribery (especially by other criminals).

I wonder what this does to Houston's bid for the Olympics in 2012. It doesn't do much for the image of hospitality when you can spend the night in jail for getting a milkshake after midnight!

Time to move the Olympics from Houston. How can the police maintain control when they themselves are out of control?

There are millions of acres available in Africa. And international airfares are at bargain rates. I'll do my share and put in for two one-way tickets to Africa for anyone who wants his "millions of acres."

My taxes have already paid much in "foreign aid" to African nations. Since these are the governments the folks in this movement love (African first - American second), they have already been compensated.
