I was in crew of a Coast Guard ship homeported in Alameda and I and a another crewmember rented a house on East 33d street Oakland so we had a place to get off the ship and frankly ‘PARTY’;-) This was in the early 70’S. The house was halfway between the Hell’s Angels HQ and the Black Panthers HQ. We both had motorcycles which we parked in the kitchen when we were there and on base when underway. The house was broken into 6 times when we were underway. When we told the landlord we weren’t going to renew he put burgler bars on all the windows to get us to stay. One night my girlfriend heard someone going in a window next door and put him upside the house with a gun, turned out his mom had nailed the door to his room shut and he he could only get to his bedroom through the window. And I reckon Oakland has gone downhill from that. Sheese!
