After several nights of violent rioting over the death of George Floyd in police custody, the release of preliminary findings from the medical examiner's autopsy will likely not ease the nationwide tensions. The findings were included in the charges made Friday against Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer who arrested Floyd and kneeled on his neck before he died Monday evening. "The autopsy revealed no physical findings that support a diagnosis of traumatic asphyxia or strangulation," read the summary of the findings from the the Hennepin County medical examiner.

BRIDGETON, New Jersey (WPVI) -- More than 100 people gathered Saturday evening for a vigil in honor of a 5-year-old girl who has been missing for seven days in Cumberland County, New Jersey. The reward for information leading to the whereabouts of Dulce Maria Alavez, who was last seen in a Bridgeton park around 5 p.m. Monday, has grown to $35,000. An Amber Alert remains in effect. During the vigil, family members explained how hard this week has been. "At home, there is an emptiness since she hasn't come back," said Dulce's uncle, Abad Perez Alavez. "She hasn't hurt anyone,...

An unofficial commemorative coin has been circulating among Border Patrol agents at the U.S./Mexico border, mocking the task of caring for migrant children and other duties that have fallen to agents as families cross into the U.S. On the front, the coin declares “KEEP THE CARAVANS COMING” under an image of a massive parade of people carrying a Honduran flag — a caricature of the “caravan” from last fall, which started in Honduras and attracted thousands of people as it moved north. (While the caravan included many women and children, the only visible figures on the coin appear to be...

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Hahnemann University Hospital says it is no longer accepting trauma patients just days after announcing the institution's planned closure for September due to unsustainable financial losses. The hospital says it notified the Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundation (PTSF) Friday night of its trauma center decision. "After reviewing our plan of closure and in consultation with the Pennsylvania Department of Health, we felt this move is in the best interest of patient safety," Dr. Alexander E. Trebelev, Chief Medical Officer at Hahnemann, said in statement released Saturday afternoon. "Unfortunately, we are facing clinical and operational challenges. We cannot continue...

So, I live in the city. And every couple of months, I’d get a slow leak in one of my tires. I figured that was normal as I work in an area with a highly unusual amount of metal shavings on the pavement. Well, last week, I had another slow leak, so I went to the tire store: “Hey! Mr. Hawthorne!” because if they had a frequent customer program, I’d have a full set of NASCAR tires. The co-owner takes a look at it and says “You’ve already got 3 patches and two nails in there. I can put another...

PHILADELPHIA -- Former District Attorney Seth Williams, a career prosecutor who chased down municipal corruption but whose tenure as Philadelphia's first black DA was mired in a corruption scandal, was sentenced Tuesday to five years in prison for accepting a bribe. The two-term Democrat didn't speak during the hearing and instead had his attorney read a statement in which he apologized and said he had failed the people of Philadelphia. "Rather than holding myself to a higher standard, I squandered that trust placed in me," the statement said. As his lawyer read it, Williams' face grew flush and he wiped...

The lawyer for the mother of a 19-year-old woman who was discovered in a Rosemont hotel’s walk-in freezer said Friday “serious questions remain” about the circumstances involving her death. Attorney Larry Rogers Jr. said “despite requests for all evidence, none of the snippets of the video” provided to the family show Kenneka Jenkins walking into the freezer at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. Just a day before, Chicago activist Andrew Holmes said he saw surveillance footage and said Jenkins went into freezer by herself, without being forced inside. “We all was wondering and wanted to know did anybody pull her down...

(CNN)Seattle Seahawks defensive end Michael Bennett, who is among prominent NFL players who protest the national anthem before games, said police in Las Vegas unfairly singled him out, threatened him with a gun and detained him briefly after he attended last month's prizefight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Conor McGregor. In a letter posted Wednesday to his Twitter account, Bennett writes that he was headed back to his hotel after the fight when he heard what sounded like gunshots. As Bennett and others around him ran for cover, he writes, Las Vegas police officers pointed guns at him "for doing...

A 12-year-old boy was in a coma over the weekend after being severely beaten by another student at a northwest suburban middle school Friday. He suffered severe injuries and was taken to Presence St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin before being transferred to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge. {SNIP} At the Elgin school district meeting Monday night, the student board member wore green, a symbol officials say is meant to represent hope. Others throughout the district wore the color in...

The Haverford School's headmaster has been placed on leave after being charged with simple assault stemming from an alleged altercation with his son after finding marijauna in his backpack. [SNIP]Nagl confiscated the drugs and his son’s cell phone as punishment but later found the phone was missing when he went to show his estranged wife the drugs. He confronted his son who refused to turn over the phone. THE LITTLE PATCH of woods off 59th Street near Cobbs Creek is a place where people drink beer, have sex in the dirt and dump their trash. Dozens of tall cans of cheap beer, a few condom wrappers and old, wet clothes were scattered there yesterday afternoon, right near a line of police tape that stretched from tree to tree. The blanket that Nyia Parler allegedly used to cover her quadriplegic son before she abandoned him there last week was gone. The Bible she allegedly left on his chest, perhaps hoping a higher power could sort it all out, was...

Folks, I need some advice here. I own two weapons, a Ruger 9, and a Mossberg 500. Both are primarily for home defense, although I have a CC and take the 9 with me occasionally. I live in the city, South Philadelphia, in a three story row home, and there are very few break-ins, not a great deal of crime in my neighborhood. I also have a wife, who has no interest in fire arms, and two children, a daughter 13 and son 11, who also have no interest in firearms. Now I keep the Mossberg in the bedroom (3rd...

IMAGINE if African-American men and boys were committing mass shootings month after month, year after year. Articles and interviews would flood the media, and we'd have political debates demanding that African-Americans be "held accountable." But when the criminals and leaders are white men, race and gender become the elephant in the room. Nearly all the mass shootings in this country in recent years have been committed by white men and boys. Unlike other groups, white men are not used to being singled out. So we expect that many of them will protest that it is unfair if we talk about...

THE LURIES were a team within a team. Co-owners of the Philadelphia Eagles, partners in various civic and community endeavors, Oscar-winning filmmakers. In the 20 years of their marriage, Christina and Jeffrey Lurie seemed the ideal teammates. For the Eagles, he ran the business of trying to make a winning team; she had a voice in the team logo, the cheerleaders' costumes, the designs of the stadium and practice facility, but primarily the charitable work of the Eagles Youth Partnership. And that original kelly green of the uniforms! Yuck! That had to go. They even co-authored a story in the Inquirer...

Nathan Blaha, 20, of Hillsboro, Wis., and his accomplices allegedly wandered the backroads of Richland County in a pickup truck, stunning deer with a light before shooting them and leaving their carcasses to rot in what he called a contest to “get the most deer,” according to court documents.

Rewards totaling $15,000 were posted today for information leading to the arrests and convictions of the men who beat Kevin Kless to death in the Historic District over the weekend. After the city announced it was offering $10,000, the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 5, which represents Philadelphia police officers, said today it would put up another $5,000. Police, at the same time, offered a slightly different account of events leading up to the killing early Saturday.
