RANTS AND RAVES 45 - Responses to Pro-Life Criticism of Veganism The following criticism of combining Vegetarianism/Veganism with a Pro-Life stance appeared on an email list I am today: >>Vegetarianism and abortion, I find that incredibly ridiculous! I just can't get this comment out of my head. It is so ridiculous...........so ridiculous that some women don't eat meat because they don't want to harm or kill an animal, yet they will willfully, and by choice, harm and kill their unborn baby. I find this incredibly ridiculous. This is my response to the above post: As a pro-choice vegan, I...

The latest embarrassment to the political press began harmlessly enough when Democratic Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid and Democratic Party Chair Howard Dean met privately Thursday morning, as they do every month. Afterwards, the pair emerged for a photo op. But because of some recent incendiary comments by Dean -- some of which Reid had distanced himself from -- the appearance attracted a throng. "About 60 reporters and cameramen attempted to shove their way into an office equipped to handle about 20," writes Washington Post reporter Mark Leibovich. "The madness began at 10:30 a.m. when the media horde was invited...

pad Sunless Tanning Top Picks Dear Dr. Dave and Dr. Dee, I used to sunbathe every summer, but I’m getting older and more wrinkles at age 37, so I’ve decided to try a sunless tanning lotion. Do these sunless tans really work and how long will the “tan” stay? Are some products better than others? If I do decide to sunbathe, will the fake tan help protect me from the sun? Signed, Sun Scared Dear Sun Scared, As the sun is the number one cause of aging and skin cancer, it’s a good idea to cut down on the sunbathing....

COEUR d'ALENE, Idaho — The person of interest in a criminal investigation of a triple homicide and a related search for two young children in northern Idaho has apparently vanished, a Kootenai County (search) sheriff's officer said Wednesday. Robert Roy Lutner (search), 33, "seems to have just disappeared," Capt. Ben Wolfinger told reporters. At 6-feet-2 and 240 pounds, Lutner's "a big guy to hide," Wolfinger said. May 16, 2005 -- TAOS, N.M. — Jennifer Wilbanks wasn't just running away from her wedding, she was running toward something — an old paramour with whom she had a steamy sexual relationship. The bolting bride set her sights on New Mexico sometime during her three-day cross-country sprint from the altar because it's the home of a short-lived fling, several sources told The Post. But if Wilbanks harbored hope of reigniting an old passion, she would have been sorely disappointed. "I would have turned her ass in, no question," former flame Todd Kendrick told The Post. "And then," he joked,...

Geraldo Rivera appears to be trawling for a new job. The war reporter and news-show host, who reportedly took a $3 million pay cut in 2001 to join Fox News Channel, is quoted in the recent edition of the Atlantic Monthly saying: "It's hard to be a show of record when you're on weekends." His show, "At Large with Geraldo Rivera," airs on FNC Saturday and Sunday nights. His four-year deal with the nation's most-watched news network expires in November. And Rivera wonders aloud if sticking with Fox is right for him. "The problem with Fox and me is they're...

Love him or hate him, credit uber-aggressive TV reporter Steve Wilson with performing a minor miracle: He's brought Detroit and Warren together. In hatred. Of Wilson. Weeks after Warren officials stonewalled the pit-bullish, scoop-loving, over-the-top reporter by answering each of his litany of questions with a nonresponsive and unfounded mantra, Detroit pastors demanded Monday that WXYZ-TV fire Wilson. Whereas Warren officials accused Wilson of mischaracterizing a trip to Costa Rica, more than two dozen pastors said their ire peaked when they heard that the muckraker had, in their words, harassed Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick on a Friday flight home from...

True Liberalism By Robert A. Sirico ROME -- We have already heard a thousand times or more that the new Pope is a conservative. As counterintuitive as this may sound, I believe that insofar as the new papacy has implications for economics and politics, it is in the direction of a humane and unifying liberalism. I speak not of liberalism as we know it now, which is bound up with state management and democratic relativism, but liberalism of an older variety that placed it hopes in society, faith, and freedom. Bear with me. When it was announced that Cardinal Joseph...

Andrea Mackris, the former associate producer for Fox News Channel who made headlines by suing talking head Bill O'Reilly for sexual harassment, recently purchased an Upper West Side condo for $809,500, according to deed-transfer records. Ms. Mackris, an alumna of Columbia University's journalism school, had worked as a producer on The O'Reilly Factor before leaving for CNN in January 2004. However, in July of that year, she returned to Fox, reportedly at a $93,000-a-year salary. Hours before Ms. Mackris filed her $60 million suit, Mr. O'Reilly sued for extortion. In the week that followed, the lurid details of the case...
