Born in 1960, I was just the rigfht age and at the perfect stage of intellectual development when the series began. I watched avidly every episode and then the reruns for decades. They became in a very real sense an extended family, sort of. {yeah... strange kid} Montalban playing Khan in first the series episode and then in 2 was a perfect choice for the role. Words like captivating and brilliant doesn’t begin to describe his portrayal and what he brought to the character. The depth of his hatred for Kirk displayed in 2 was extraordinary. “To the last, I grapple with thee; From Hell’s heart, I stab at thee; For hate’s sake, I spit my last breath at thee.” Kirk was Khan’s white whale.

....and yes, if I no longer shed a tear seeing spock die, having done so more times than I care to admit... I certainly feel deeply emotional at that scene.

A little something I’ve been thinking about and working up for posting on another site. Any feedback is welcomed.

I’d like to posit a hypothetical situation.

Imagine a small group of people.......perhaps 2-3% of the population. This group for whatever reason or reasons that seem good to them decides that blindness, {lack of visual sight as opposed to common sense} is a healthy, fun and normal lifestyle and is one certainly deserving of respect and every benefit society has to offer. Including driving cars.

At first thought this might seem absurd, crazy, even bizarre. But throughout history people and groups have been known for crazy, bizarre movements of all sorts. Deviance from the percieved norm is not therefore a solid foundation in and of itself for condemning their choice or denying them freedoms we all enjoy. Or so they begin arguing as their movement becomes more vocal politically. Comprised primarily of people born with sight who later became blind for reasons that remain unclear and highly controversial, there is also a small contingent of those who advocate self blinding and promote blindness in others.

This group for years has been denied certain benefits, freedoms and privaledges in society based solely on what they percieve as discrimination, hatred, bias and so to remedy this aweful afront to their downtrodden and persecuted members they take council among themselves and come to several conclusions which form the basis of a plan of action.

This action plan lets call for sake of this discussion a “manifesto”. First and foremost they come to understand that they must change the way society views their group, from that of a handicap or illness to one of absolute normality. Towards that end they identify what they must do and who they must co-opt to effect this societal change.

They first move against the medical establishment, Opticians in particular. Various professional optical groups are petitioned, picketed and protested to change not only their diagnosis but the terminology used in their journals. Blindness is eventually delisted as a debility or illness from opthemalogical reference books. Words such as “handicap”, “sighted”, “vision impaired” are dumped in favor of terms like “differently sensed” and “alternatively gifted”.

Research into restoring sight to the blind comes to a crashing stop and any mention of cures or treatment is now downplayed or outright ridiculed and discouraged. Papers and studies by prominant and formerly well respected members of the opthemological community are black listed in peer journals.

This push also extends to the political and journalistic realms in society. Over several decades more and more politicians sympathic to the cause are backed in political races by this group and their allies. Many politicians whose sight is failing or who wear glasses in private are outed. Long standing laws and regulations on the books governing who can drive busses, taxis, airplanes fall in one state after another as blindophile judges rule against society at large in favor of this small, vociferous group.

On the media front journalists, producers, moviemakers and popular stars lend their backing and voices to the cause. TV shows are aired showing how it is wrong, discriminatory and immoral to deny the blind anything. Anyone in society who speaks up and says “wait a moment, is this really such a good idea?” is attacked as being hatefilled neo-optiphobes. Neo-Optiphobia becomes the new byword for preventing and stopping any discussion of the merits and is wielded like a sledgehammer against groups and individuals that spring up with the goal of informing the public that operating a plane or car or bus when you cant see might be dangerous and isnt such a grand idea.

Having gained some considerable measure of of support from politicians, doctors and media figures the tone of the “debate” changes. Where before they largely argued for acceptance, now they begin framing the debate in terms of “rights for the blind”. In state after state where its put to a ballot measure the people overwhelmingly vote to not allow blind people to drive motor vehicles.

Almost emmediately blindophile judges apointed by blindophile politicians decide the public is too ignorant and uninformed to understand the issue and reverses the vote, ruling it unconstitutional. The newly created “Right to Drive Blind”, nowhere found in the letter of the Constitution or Bill of Rights becomes enshrined in the law.

As the death toll on the highways mounts and concerned citizens point to it saying “Hello? Is anyone seeing this?”, a major campaign is mounted to silence them. People speaking out are told that lots of people die on the highways and not all are differently sensed or alternately gifted. Stats from the USDOT showing that blind people are dieing and killing people on the roads at far higher rates are discounted and labeled as neo-optiphobic propaganda.

In several cases around the nation a blind person is denied or dismissed from jobs like driving school busses, trains, taxis etc. They bring suit and win huge settlements against employers with judges ruling their right to operate motor vehicles had been violated on the basis of workplace discrimination.

In a slew of legal cases brought nationwide against a time honored and revered boys group dedicated to building better citizens through motorcycle and go kart racing, the blind lobby and its lawyers attempt to sue the organization into allowing openly blind people teach children how to race motorcycles and go karts. Claiming the group’s long standing rule that “you cant race if you cant see” is a violation of the rights of blind people, they seek to bankrupt the organisation through repeated and frivolous lawsuits.

The movement suffers one small setback as video is published on the internet showing one of the movement’s leaders giving an impassioned speech at a Blindness Day parade where he railed against the hatred and bigotry of those who say “blind people shouldnt be driving”. He gave this well written and moving speech from the roof of his rainbow painted car which sadly he’d parked on several of the gathered parade goers. The main stream media ignored this story and the accompanying video completely.

New laws are passed making it a “hate crime” to think or say that blind people shouldnt be driving. Along the way national groups are set up with the sole purpose of going into schools and teaching kids that driving blind is healthy, fun and above all else.......normal. Any opposing point of view is labeled and ridiculed as intolerant or archaic or simply motivated by hate.

In washington DC, the newly elected blindophile president appoints blindophilic judges to the supreme court. Eventually, a case makes its way to the high court....now with a blindophilic majority and it becomes the law of the land. In their majority ruling, they affirm that the founders always meant for blind people to operate buggies and carriages and that tranlates to modern society in the form of motored vehicles. This rulling was delayed however for several months as the cheif justice was in a car accident.

The dissenting opinion, the shortest on record and consisting of only three words stated simply.......”This is crazy”.
