The ash from coal fired plants is OK. That ash contains some very nasty stuff including heavy metals. Bury the ash in a hole in the ground where it is hazardous waste for "millennia" and no one cares? The ground water and streams near the coal mines are polluted for "millennia" and no one cares? The ground water and streams near the rail roads that transport the coal are polluted for "millennia" and no one cares? There has been significant efforts in recent years to clean up the smokestack discharge but it's still dumping the same pollutants into the surrounding land. I know. One of my favorite fishing holes was down wind of a small coal fired power plant. It's history "for millennia".
I believe it to be a short term benefit and a long term hazard.
The carbon dioxide that the coal, oil, and gas power plants dump into our atmosphere is not a long term hazard??????
If you want a real awakening about the future hazards of coal fired power, take a look at the mine, transportation, and power plant planning for the next 50 years. Transportation includes the power lines.
Visit your local coal powered power plant? That's a joke. Visitors aren't allowed near coal fired plants. It's too hazardous and dirty. But, I've visited several nuclear plants. To my knowledge, we aren't allowed in the facilities proper but it's normal to have visitor centers nearby. Compare them for yourself.
When I visited the Calvert Cliffs nuclear power plant in Maryland, I was amazed that I was so near the facility and was not offended by it's presence. No rail roads, piles of dirty coal and ash, smoke stacks, nothing. Except for the ground vibrations from the generators and the power lines, one would not know the facility was there. And, that plant, on that day, was generating about two gigawatts of power. It was supplying power for several million homes and associated industries. It was the first choice for power by the utilities in the area. The other utilities could purchase the power from Calvert Cliffs for much less than they could generate it with coal themselves.
Get your head out of it and think for yourself. Get the whole story. The nuclear option can be managed if we get serious about the task and it's way past time to get serious.
