nuclear waste.....that is dangerous for millenia

The ash from coal fired plants is OK. That ash contains some very nasty stuff including heavy metals. Bury the ash in a hole in the ground where it is hazardous waste for "millennia" and no one cares? The ground water and streams near the coal mines are polluted for "millennia" and no one cares? The ground water and streams near the rail roads that transport the coal are polluted for "millennia" and no one cares? There has been significant efforts in recent years to clean up the smokestack discharge but it's still dumping the same pollutants into the surrounding land. I know. One of my favorite fishing holes was down wind of a small coal fired power plant. It's history "for millennia".

I believe it to be a short term benefit and a long term hazard.

The carbon dioxide that the coal, oil, and gas power plants dump into our atmosphere is not a long term hazard??????

If you want a real awakening about the future hazards of coal fired power, take a look at the mine, transportation, and power plant planning for the next 50 years. Transportation includes the power lines.

Visit your local coal powered power plant? That's a joke. Visitors aren't allowed near coal fired plants. It's too hazardous and dirty. But, I've visited several nuclear plants. To my knowledge, we aren't allowed in the facilities proper but it's normal to have visitor centers nearby. Compare them for yourself.

When I visited the Calvert Cliffs nuclear power plant in Maryland, I was amazed that I was so near the facility and was not offended by it's presence. No rail roads, piles of dirty coal and ash, smoke stacks, nothing. Except for the ground vibrations from the generators and the power lines, one would not know the facility was there. And, that plant, on that day, was generating about two gigawatts of power. It was supplying power for several million homes and associated industries. It was the first choice for power by the utilities in the area. The other utilities could purchase the power from Calvert Cliffs for much less than they could generate it with coal themselves.

Get your head out of it and think for yourself. Get the whole story. The nuclear option can be managed if we get serious about the task and it's way past time to get serious.

We need to become independent of their oil.

Coal. I've said it here before, and I'll say it again -- coal. The US is the Saudi Arabia of coal.

We have a nuclear alternative also. Coal is dirty. Coal kills many times more people; Mining accidents and disease; Transportation accidents and pollution. Ask anyone that lives near rail roads that are used to transport coal. The ash builds up outside power plants and is nasty stuff.

As a nation, we need to get over the phobia attached to nuclear energy. It's dangerous but can be managed.

"popularity polls" which has a spurious record of turning ot to be mirages when it comes to voting time.

You got it. When voting time arrives, this will backfire again. How many time do we have to suffer through this?

I always see these polls with JFK at or near the top of polls regarding great presidents. Someone please make a case to support such lofty status!

He was martyred before he had to face his actions in a reelection bid and/or as a sitting President. JFK would have been held accountable for the Bay of Pigs failure among other things. Johnson couldn't face the American people for JFK getting us involved in Vietnam. If the truth had come out during his Presidency about MM he may have been impeached.

keep guns out of the hands of criminals

The first thing it will do is keep some of the gun owners money (taxes) into the criminal's (the state of maryland) pockets. Try registering a cat there and see how much $$$$ you'll fork over.

How many times must conservative leaders do this before they learn. Accommodating liberal agenda items will not result in more support from the right wing groups. Homosexual activists are not middle of the road. They are solidly in the liberal/democrat/socialist camp.

mostly about people too stupid to manage their own lives.

That is the reason that I get a recommendation from a friend before even getting interested in a movie. I can't sit there and watch a plot after something so stupid takes palace. Who cares what happens to a person that, as you said, is "too stupid to manage their own lives." I don't pay attention to such things in real life, why should I pay attention to such a movie. And that includes the vast majority of movies made today.

It grieves me to say this but I believe this nation is doomed to dissolution and there is no turning back.

I don't have a copy of "The Republic of Plato" handy but memory tells me that your points parallel that writing very well. It's a long recognized process that our well educated Founding Fathers knew of and warned us about. I recall Plato speaking about democracies degrading until even the little dogs stand on their hind legs and have their say. We lost this country when it stopped being a republic and became a democracy. Clinton is not the cause of our decline. He is the natural product of it. And I agree with you. I don't see a way back.

By the time of the next presidential election, the jubilation of the middle east confect will be warn away and replaced by the realization of the costs of an extended war with the Moslem world. The voters will be back to voting for their government to protect and support them. It's a chilling thought that that slimbag might run again on "his economic track record." What a sad sad day if he was elected again.

We have the little old lady in the hamburger commercials of that period saying the famous line "Where's the beef?" When it come's to the Government defending it's actions, I've got to say "Where's the front door?" Until the crime of removing that door from the area is investigated and all the people involved identified along with their motives revealed, I'm not interested in hearing anything else the Government has to say. WHERE'S THE FRONT DOOR?????

Are we somehow surprised that a person that would kill their own helpless baby would steal from a church? I.d like to see the names of those that kill their own published in the local paper along with the rest of the criminals.

I had better be carful. I may be committing a crime by just suggesting such a thing.

Considering that the Captain is getting the PC boot out of his job, I think the gubberment should spend a few million retraining him. Oh silly me. I forgot. It's only those people on the PC list of favorites that get benefits like that.

Senior zoo officials say the move is necessary because his current cage, about 45 by 80 feet, was built in the 1930s and isn't stable.

This sounds soooooo similar to the "reorganization" BS that was pulled on us middle aged white men. The bottom line was the same. We lost our jobs. Captain old buddy, you and I need to go somewhere and have a drink. We've got some things in common.

Don't change the name. Change the mascot to a potato. To me that would be victory to rub in the liberals face for years.
