  • History Channel's special series: "America's War on Drugs"

    06/24/2017 3:55:20 AM PDT · 14 of 23
    JPX2011 to logician2u

If this approximately six hour program can be summed up it’s the three words that are constantly bandied about by interviewees to establish a narrative about the war on drugs: “irony,” “inadvertent,” and “backfired.”

1.) MKUltra causes the counter-cultural revolution.
2.) Nixon’s initiation of the war on drugs is a war on blacks and hippies.
3.) American paranoia about Soviet influence in our hemisphere leads to the Colombian/Mexican cartels
4.) CIA is responsible for the heroin and crack-cocaine ‘epidemic’ and other evils.
5.) 9/11 and the War on Terror is just a natural extension to the war on drugs.

Obviously, this is a special about drugs, but in attempting to envelop almost the entirety of 50 years of domestic and foreign policy as a ‘drug thing’ without a semblance of context the people who put this together stepped outside their wheelhouse and the whole thing looks ridiculous.

It comes off as flippant and Oliver Stone-like in its hand-waving dismissal of the national security, strategic, and domestic aims of the United States. They might as well come out and say the purpose of this program was to establish a foundation for the legalization of all drugs in the United States, absent any other suggestions made in the program.

The way I read this is that Syria, like Turkey with Manbij, is attempting to appropriate battlefield successes by the SDF. ISIS is just about done, and now the jockeying for strategic positioning is beginning.

Who is George Friedman, and what is Geopolitical Futures and why should we listen to them?

He's a Sebastian Gorka type. War College, RAND Corporation, National Defense University lecturer and all that. Founded Stratfor.

Two main methods: seismograph analysis that can determine the wave pattern. Different between earthquake and nuke. Second, air-sniffing aircraft detecting certain particles. The caveat, as far as I can see, is that there’s a lot of information about these types of aircraft, what it does, where it’s going etc. But damn if I can find an actual report on their findings. It may be classified, I don’t know.

1.) NK won’t ever develop the bomb.
2.) NK didn’t develop the bomb, it was a fizzle.
    3.) NK missiles aren’t reliable.
4.) NK can’t develop an SLBM
5.) NK can’t miniaturize a nuke and put it on a missile.
6.) NK missiles can’t deliver a payload that can withstand atmospheric-reentry <—You are Here.

Call me skeptical, but I don’t see anything happening that needs to happen. One day we’ll wake up and read, “Yes they have ICBM’s and no, nothing we can do about it now. Mutually Assured Destruction and all that. Sorry (not sorry).”

Difficult to say. There are competing motivations. Juche calls for self-reliance but not apart from a ‘dear leader’.

So it’ll play out in one of two ways: Either they become paralyzed borg because their queen has been taken out or they launch.

I watched part 3 of “The Great War” (American Experience) on public television instead.

I saw your comment last night. I had just finished watching Designated Survivor and it was pretty bad. So I went searching for this PBS special and started watching Part 1. Have to admit, I fell asleep. All I kept hearing was women this, and African-American that. PBS making sure to checkmark those identity politics boxes. It was almost as bad as Designated Survivor.

Please tell me a 6-part series about America and World War I has more to offer than that.

Yup - as long he sticks to killing off ISIS as his goal and doesn’t get sucked into some Syrian-spring regime change nation-building pit, things are good by me.

Same here. My understanding is we got JSOC elements helping Kurds to take over Raqqa, a Marine detachment for fire support, and Rangers in Manbij to keep the Turks from doing a Stalin and take advantage of the situation. All ISIS-related missions. So I'm not concerned at the moment.

I would guess that a lot of Trump voters did not expect him to keep his word on everything. What politician actually means what he says? Those who assumed he was insincere may have been mistaken.

I can appreciate that. I have my doubts on the wall, but that's not from Trump's lack of trying. Sometimes the swamp is going to win.

However, we have to choose a narrow goal in Syria. We can topple Assad and let ISIS win, we can crush ISIS and let Assad win, or we can stay out of the way and allow Russia to help Assad win. The unrealistic option is to topple Assad and plan for a pro-Western regime to take power and crush ISIS and crush Al Qaeda. That will not be happening.

Absolutely agree with this. And time will tell if Trump has learned from the failures of Bush and Obama. But the hysteria is just that, hysterical. One cruise missile strike an invasion does not make. A strike which served multiple purposes. Personally, I couldn't care if Assad is responsible or not. One Syrian airbase in exchange for keeping Assad honest, and potentially giving Kim Jong-un second thoughts is worth it.

But some of these people want to go down false flag rabbit holes, or play, 'Law & Order' like a bunch of fact-checkers from Snopes and in the meantime conflate the mission against ISIS with the strike.

Hold on a second. For years we’ve excoriated Obama and his, “ISIS is the JV” mentality. Trump disputed that and said he’s going to, “Wipe ISIS of the face of the Earth,” and told Mattis to come up with a plan to do just that. That plan is being implemented. So either you agree with Obama and his approach, or you agree with Trump. Ostensibly you voted for Trump, and heard what he said on the campaign. Did you think this was not going to happen?

I’ve had the same thoughts. I read somewhere that Like Kathryn Bigelow with ‘Zero Dark Thirty’ the producers of Homeland sit down with CIA people and have a chat about general threat assessments. Which is why the show can seem unnervingly prescient or relevant.

Now that’s the PR answer. The real answer is that Showtime, a property of CBS is part of the mainstream media and they generate narratives that feed off each other. It’s no coincidence that the last couple of episodes of Homeland regarding the ‘boiler room’ dovetails with the 60 minutes piece on Mike Cernovich, bots and ‘fake news’.

So, yes. It is a deep state information war campaign.

Depends. Whether one believes Marines should be at risk only in the event of mortal danger to the United States or if it’s necessary to risk the lives of Marines to keep China in its box, lest it become a regional hegemon and dominate the Pacific?

Answer that question, then you answer Bismarck’s.

I believe this is one of the reasons Flynn had to go. He didn’t suffer from the ‘going asiatic’ syndrome as most generals who’ve spent time in the sandbox, ala NSA H.R. McMasters and Secretary Mattis. Too many sit downs with tribal leaders, kings, and Saudi princes.

There is one caveat: Executive orders are subject to judicial review. Thank John Marshall and Marbury v. Madison. But really wasn’t used until the Truman era. It’s why Obama’s DACA EO’s were held up by the courts. Except in this case, the courts are wrong.

Indeed. I’ve seen stories about them combing through ISIS videos to get locations and then turning that data over to the Russian Ministry of Defense and airstrikes have resulted. Don’t know how true it is, but this makes me more of a believer.
