Authorities say a weapon discharged inside a store while an employee was showing it to a customer, with the bullet hitting a child standing nearby. It happened at Woodbury Outfitters at approximately 1:55 p.m. Monday afternoon. The Coshocton County sheriff's office received a 911 call reporting it. Eyewitnesses say the bullet richocheted off the floor and struck a 2-year-old child in the leg. The child was taken to a local hospital and then flown to Columbus Children's Hospital by a MedFlight helicopter. Two-year-old Ryan Gildow remained hospitalized Monday night following surgery. He was listed in fair condition after the bullet...

Ronald McDonald has seen the future: It's a latte and a focaccia sandwich. Facing softening burger sales, an obesity epidemic and a nation whose palate is evolving, the country's biggest restaurant chain wades into the espresso business Wednesday when it opens a Starbucks-style coffee bar called McCafe inside a Mountain View McDonald's. Walk into the restaurant, turn right and the place looks just like every other McDonald's. Turn left and you're inside a faux-hipster espresso bar, complete with comfy chairs, Frank Sinatra on the sound system and an Italian espresso machine steaming up McLattes. "I was shocked at how much...

Amnesty International?s executive director says Washington?s war against Al Qaeda has dealt a severe blow to human rights worldwide By Brian Braiker NEWSWEEK WEB EXCLUSIVE   May 29 -- The "war on terror" ensured that 2002 was a good year for political repression, arbitrary detentions, draconian immigration measures and torture, according to Amnesty International's annual report, released this week. THE LONDON-BASED international human-rights watchdog made its fiercest assault yet on the policies pursued by the United States and Britain since the attacks of September 11, 2001. According to the report, the U.S.-led antiterror campaign has done more to harm human...
  • Handgun legislation heads to Ohio Senate

Ohioans who want to carry concealed handguns for their protection will turn their attention to the state Senate now that the House again has voted to allow county sheriffs to issue permits to qualified individuals 21 or older. Virtually repeating its action of a year ago, the House voted 69-28 to authorize undercover handguns for Ohioans who pass a criminal-background check and a certified course in handling, shooting and storing weapons. "I expect to handle it expeditiously,'' Senate President Doug White, R-Manchester, said. "We had a full, honest, open, aggressive debate on it late last year. I expect we'll be...

Subject: Haunting memories At a UNC lecture the other day they played a video of Oliver North during the Iran-Contra deals during the Reagan administration. There was Ollie in front of God and Country getting the third degree. But what he said was stunning. He was being drilled by some senator; 'Did you not recently spend close to $60,000 for a home security system?' Oliver replied, 'Yes I did sir.' The senator continued, trying to get a laugh out of the audience, 'Isn't this just a little excessive?' 'No sir,' continued Oliver. 'No. And why not?' 'Because the life of ...

I knew that there were anti-WTO protests going on; some of my friends were going to be participating, even, so I knew there'd be some disruption. I packed a sleeping bag and a clean T-shirt into a rucksack and headed off to my downtown office nice and early that morning. Got a fantastic parking space in my overpriced garage. Went to my desk and started working. Around eleven I started hearing about tear gas. I clicked up a live news feed in some horrid streaming video format. They were discussing the nature of the chemical weapons being used two ...
