MARTIN - Brad Johnson told his awful story late Tuesday afternoon, remembering in a soft, unsteady voice the rifle shot that took a stranger's life and changed his own forever. "I have a lot of questions to God about why this thing had to happen," the 51-year-old Martin-area farmer said during a telephone interview from his home. "It's a terrible thing. It's a freak thing. To me, it's impossible that it could even happen." But it did happen last Friday afternoon, in a blurred convergence of poor judgment and fickle chance that left 39-year-old Jay Torgerson of Custer lying in...

Okay - I realize this is a vanity - hopefully I selected the appropriate place for it. I'm looking for ideas for a new tattoo and thought that I'd stick it out here for suggestions. Specifically - I am looking for something that combines a bear - or bear paw/claws with a 'patriotic' theme. any ideas/graphics would be appreciated. Nothing too huge - as this is intended for an upper arm.

An experiment in the United States has created a mixed-sex human embryo. The team involved insists that the creation of an hermaphrodite human embryo was designed to cure illness, but critics say moral and ethical standards have been breached. The process they used creates what is known as a "chimaera" - a blend of two embryos, each of which would have a distinct genetic identities. Click here to see how a mixed-sex embryo could be created But any attempt to produce such a baby would provoke a worldwide ethical storm. In experiments using donated embryos, scientists from the Centers for...

Anna Kournikova may not be taking part in the 2003 Wimbledon tournament but that has not dimmed her popularity online. According to figures gathered by web monitoring firm NetNames the Russian tennis star has more sites than any other player dedicated to her. Rising star Andy Roddick currently tops the men's website rankings perhaps because of his victory at Queens in the run up to the Wimbledon championships. Britain's Tim Henman is close behind Mr Roddick when it comes to the number of websites devoted to him. Site seeing On the web women's tennis is much more popular than the...

There's a joke that says that it's 99 percent of politicians who give the rest a bad name. Mac users may feel this way upon hearing that a Wired article reveals that Macs are the ugly stepchildren in our nation's capital. The story reports that the Senate Office of the Sergeant at Arms (SAA), which makes technology recommendations to senators, is strongly anti-Mac. The SAA has eliminated almost all Macs on Capitol Hill with the exception of three offices: Kennedy's, Sen. Tim Johnson (D-South Dakota) and the office of the Democratic Policy Committee. "The SAA's recommendations aren't mandatory, but those...

Okay, this is not from any published article, but is simply a personal experience. A good friend of mine (fellow FREEper) and I were having lunch. As (almost) always we went to get some coffee after we were done eating. At the little coffee shop - we noticed two gentlemen sitting at a table going through 4 or 5 passports. Now, from what I could see - I was only a couple of feet from them - these were not U.S. passports. The gentlemen appeared to be "Arab" - dark skin, dark hair - could be Pakistani, Indian, don't really ...
