  • High Court Allows State To Require IDs At Polls

Great decision, but does anyone know what effect this will have on the voter ID law passed in Georgia and turned down by a judge?
In a close election voter ID is critical to avoid massive voter fraud. The election is so close and states have passed laws requiring voter IDs. SO again will this action by the supreme court apply US wide?

    Thanks

Wexford has apparently grown since the days in the late 1940's when I attended the Catholic School on U.S. 19. My recollection was that Wexford consisted mostly of the Catholic Church and School and a drive in movie. We lived on a farm several miles away and the shool used a station wagon as a school bus. We had to walk out to the paved road.I haven't been back in years and suppose that I would be totally lost if I ever did.

To me, the cornerstone of democratic government is the vote. We decide issues by a democratic vote. The Democratic filibuster denies the senators the right to vote on the President's nominees. It also denies the nominees the right to have a vote taken on their nomination. The Republicans need to stand firm and do whatever is necessary to save this essential democratic process of voting.

Saw the speech on C-Span. Great speech. Had a detailed discussion on the war on terror and the decision to invade Iraq that should be widely broadcast as it refutes many of the falsehoods put out by the opposition left. Joe Paterno who is an institution in Pennsylvania was almost over the top in his rabid introduction of the President. According to the York newspapers the crowd was 7,000, not the several thousand mentioned in this article. The crowd was large, filled the hall and was loud and enthusiastic.

Hope we see more speeches like this from the President.

This book is a must read. What struck me as I read it was that how arbitrary the government can be when there is no God. The government can then send people to jail based on changing whims. It drove home to me how important it is that this nation is founded on the belief in God and man as created by God with inalienable rights not subject to state control. To those who don't think the "under God" in the pledge of allegience battle is important, you have to read this book to understand just what happens in a society where is no God. No one is safe.

Why is Anne Gorelick on the panel ? She was the deputy attorney general during the Clinton administration and one would assume that as the number 2 person at Justice, she would have been a part of the policy decisions establishing and maintaining the wall. She should be a witness testifying not a member of the panel. Her presence is not only partisan, but also a conflict of interest. How hard is she going to ask her former boss about the Justice Department and its subordinate the FBI? What do you think?

I think that the Democrats have overplayed their hand and that the commission hearings will help Bush. The commission has had to look at the Clinton administration's sorry performance. Also, seeing Albright and Cohen and Powell and Rumsfeld all on the same day gave us a chance to compare them. Who do you want leading us in times of danger? Powell and Rumsfeld win this one as they looked so much more competent and forceful. Thanks to the White House's finally standingn up for itself,Clark lost a lot of credibility. On the whole rather than being a negative for Bush and the good guys, I think the hearings this week have helped.

I can't believe Humpty Dumpty is still alive. Her legend has to go all the way back to WWII. I know when I went TDY to Naples in the early 70's, I was always shown her location on the road leading into the Navy base. I don't know what Naples is like today, but back then it was noisy, dirty, confusing and just my least favorite city in the world.

Rota on the other hand is really great.

Watching the president in Iraq, I was impressed how much of a "man's man" he is. I was discussing with the "men" after turkey and dressing who are true southerners and have voted democrat most of their lives. Their reaction to Bush is that he is a "ranger', a Texas Ranger as in the "Lonesome Dove" book and movie. This is high praise indeed and leads me to believe that Bush should do well next year, especially in the heart of Dixie.

Bill Pryor is doing a great job here in Alabama as the attorney general. Unfortunately he is a believing Catholic and so fails the Democrat litnus test. So there will be a filibuster. The message is clear - Catholics and other believing Christians are not eligible for public office. Is this what America is about? The Republicans have to take the democrats on and beat this unconstitutional use of the filibuster to prevent a vote on the president's nominees.

Can you believe??? Yes sir, if Supremes make "wrong decision" all the president has to do is write an executive order. Can you imagine the uproar if someone suggested an executive order to fix Roe v Wade??? These are not serious people and these are serious times that require serious leadership.
  • Ramsey Clark to Protesters: 'Let's Impeach Bush'

Your questioning LBJ appointing Clark as AG brought back to mind the story I heard at the time of the appointment. Ramsey's father was Supreme Court Justice Tom Clark. LBJ wanted to appoint his friend Abe Fortis to the Supreme Court, but there was no vacancy. The rumor was that he appointed Ramsy, who was then the assistant attorney general for land and natural resources as attorney general and Justice Clark resigned in order to advoid a conflict of interest. A cynical political move which backfired because Abe couldn't be confirmed and Ramsy was an embarrassment as attorney general. Fortunately, LBJ's term and Clark's appontment soon ended; however, we still suffer the after effects as the position has given him a certain amount of credibility as a legitemate person instead of the son of a supreme court justice who was used becasue of his dad.

This was the story I heard in the late 1960's. Can anyone verify it?

While I agree with the concept of the draft and the idea of shared sacrifice, I don't trust Rangle's motives. The volunteer Army is providing the US a properly sized, professional. trained and motivated soldier. The potential conflict with Iraq is the trumpet call for all the old anti-vietnam activists. A chance to return to their glory, unfortunately, the young are not responding, just the aging baby-boomers. I suspect that the call for a draft by people who in their youth opposed anything military is driven by the belief that the draft would cause unrest by those who would be subject to it. The intent is not to promote national unity, but rather to create a climate of turmoil and protest with the goal of furthering the left agenda. I lived through the vietnam era and all the unrest. We are only now getting over it. I don't need to go through it again.

Thank you for bringing some facts about the true nature of communist involvement in the Spanish Civil War. I believe that Franco was a true Spanish hero. The transfer of power at his death to a monarch and democratic parliement was remarkable and is a true testament to his genuine love for his country and people. Could you picture a communist doing that? The writer of the article may be a dupe, but he does portray the normal version of the war. Hopefully over time the true facts will become more readily available and taught.
  • Good Will Hunting? Feinstein Calls for Review of FBI's Actions in 1950s & 60's

I have to react to this. J. Edgar Hoover, unlike modern Democrats, took the communist threat seriously especially in an era when governments all over the world were being subverted and overthrown by communists. So when people walked and talked like communists, he investigated in order to prevent subversion and the overthrow of our government. Overall I would say that he did a good job. I suspect that one of the reasons why the Democratic congress severely restricted the CIA and FBI intelligence capabilities in the 1970's was to prevent information coming out on the possible connections of the democratic left, especially the peace movement, with communists. In regards to Ms Feinstein's proposal, I would suggest that in light of the current threat, that there are higher priorities than trying to stomp on Hoover's grave again. What would the investigation accomplish? But then, maybe it could show that the FBI had legimate concerns. By the way, is she going to include the FBI investigations ordered by St Robert Kennedy?

Even more fundamental to Western success than science, democracy etc. is the Judeo-Christian belief in the nature of Man. The belief that man was created in the image and likeness of God, has a soul and eternal life joined with free will has enable the West to develop structures that recognize this inherent dignity of man and to provide the freedom within which he may exercise his free will in pursuit of his eternal destiny. While modern culture denies the judo-christian beliefs, they are still the underlying force of western law and culture.

The Republicans should be hammering the Democratic leadership for refusing to vote, not only on presidential nominations, but also on legislation that has been passed by the House. The Senate has a consititutional responsibility to vote on legislation and on nominations. We should all, democrats and republicans, demand that the Senate do its duty and vote. This is not a partisan issue. I'd love to see the Senate republicans and others stand on the steps of the Capital and publicly demand that Daschle allow them to vote. Last year the Democrats were demanding that all the votes be counted. Now they are allowing votes only when they are sure of the outcome in advance. The Senate majority leader should not have this much power. It is undemocratic and an outrage. The American system is based on deciding issues by a democratic vote. Without the vote, we don't have democracy, we have something different that has an odor.

All these charges may be true, but don't forget that our esteemed US Senate deemed that none met the level of impeachable offense. So remember how your senator voted so that you can cast your vote accordingly the next time the clown runs for election.
