CA is always going to be wealthy, it’s baked in with the deep water ports and the world’s most advanced agricultural sector. How much greater the state could be under rational governance can only be speculated... someone should give it a try some day.
I’m leaving California for Arkansas in July... already bought a house in the Arkansas River Valley. Aside from all the social unrest, it’s also incredibly expensive here. The house I bought in AR is half the price of the one I sold here so I’ll have a little cash in my pocket after the move.
this is a small counter-escalation in response to Russia’s escalation by seriously upping attacks and the threat to Kharkhiv, which is not even near being an ethic majority Russian city (or oblast).
I was in England in ‘64 when Dylan and Baez toured together. My parents were fans and went out and bought every album they could find of them... so I grew up listening to both. I know Baez is a leftist and many of her songs rub me the wrong way but I just love her... I’ve seen her several times in concert and she is a very engaging person. It also should be said that when the Vietcong took over Vietnam, Baez was the loudest voice criticizing them for their persecution of the ethnic Chinese who became the ‘boat people.’
I had a friend whose favorite Dylan line was “Give me a string-bean I’m a hungry man...” I’m serious... he loved that line.
I had another friend who wrote his Master’s Thesis in English at Sac. State on the line “The sun’s not yellow, it’s chicken.” I’m serious, he wrote a whole Master’s thesis on just that line.
So was 'Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts' - same album. In fact Dylan commissioned a screenplay for it and one other screenplay was written but somehow the film never got made.
It would have been a serious omission. ‘Thin Man’ was sort of Dylan’s ‘Babbitt.’ The harassed middle class man, always two steps behind of what is really ‘happening.’ Dylan played the piano on that one and did it well.
My father loved that song.. Dylan’s version, he even shopped around for “boots of Spanish leather.” Didn’t find any that I recall, in that pre-internet age. I think he just wanted to say “..check out these boots, they’re made out of Spanish leather... like the song” . heh.
Congrats... back then I was on the enemy side, didn’t come over until Obama’s mob took over the DNC.
I think Hugo’s funeral attendance used to be listed as a world record... apparently the entire city of Paris came out for it. I think we should be that way with writers, teach young people that words and word-craft is important.
