Republicans nearly doubled their counteroffer to $1 trillion in negotiations with President Joe Biden over his infrastructure package. “We’re not going to disturb the 2017 tax bill, which was the best economy of my lifetime,” Sen. Roger Wicker (R-MS) said. “We’re going to make it eight years, as the President said he would accept. We’re going to hit a figure, very close to what the President said he would accept.”

Members of the Republican Study Committee, the largest conservative caucus in Congress, unveiled their plan to rein in spending and cut taxes on Wednesday — in an effort to offer an alternative proposal to the Biden administration’s big-spending plans. The proposal looks to balance the federal budget in five years while cutting $14.4 trillion over the course of a decade and lowering taxes by $1.9 trillion, with the architects of the proposal stating that it would lead to a budget surplus by 2026.

Senate Republicans on Thursday have formally countered President Joe Biden’s $2.25 trillion proposal at $568 billion. The proposal maintains the 21 percent corporate tax rate and current state and local tax (SALT) deductions, opposing Biden’s tax hike to 28 percent and Senate Democrats’ proposal of 25 percent. The initiative also includes raising “taxes on those making more than $400,000 a year,” Axios reported.
