The overall best VPN services encrypt all your internet traffic and pass it through a private tunnel to their own secure servers so that no one can see what you're reading or downloading - not the government, not your ISP, not even the VPN service itself.Very simply, a VPN (short for virtual private network) is an app you can download for your mobile or laptop that allows you to hide your location, identity and IP address from the rest of the internet. All internet content is completely encrypted - securely jumbled so no one could read it even if they intercepted...

WASHINGTON (AP) - The National Security Agency has been collecting the telephone records of millions of U.S. customers of Verizon under a top secret court order, according to a report in Britain's Guardian newspaper.

The order was granted by the secret Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court on April 25 and is good until July 19, the newspaper reported Wednesday. The order requires Verizon, one of the nation's largest telecommunications companies, on an "ongoing, daily basis" to give the NSA information on all telephone calls in its systems, both within the U.S. and between the U.S. and other countries.

  • YouTube "Feather"- A Lower Bandwidth Experience

Yesterday YouTube opened to the public their newest Beta, the YouTube "Feather" service. Feather is a slightly stripped down version of YouTube for those who have low bandwidth and/ or connection issues. Feather stills gives you the YouTube "experience", that is, you can still watch and listen to all of the same videos. The difference is that HQ/HD won't be available, and comments and other "fluff stuff" are limited or removed. The loading and playing of the videos is faster and smoother, I can attest to that.

License Plates for the Internet - The Blueprints for Obama's Assault on the Internet The report's recommendations emphasize taking away cybersecurity from DHS in order to create a special department to oversee cybersecurity. It recommends ending the division between civilian and national security systems. And calls for establishing "international norms" when it comes to the internet. And it focuses a good deal on identity verification, not just for Federal employees, but for ordinary Americans as well. The report urges a move away from passwords, and toward physical identity verification, via a device that would verify an individual's identity. And calls...
  • Church bans broadband over porn fears

A church in southern Sweden has refused to allow a wireless broadband antenna to be installed on its tower, after fears were raised that parishoners would stay home surfing for porn instead of attending services. The proposal to install broadband equipment at the church in Hylletofta, 200 kilometres east of Gothenburg, would have brought high speed internet access to the community, where residents currently have to struggle with dial-up connections. But the Church of Sweden decided that the ability to download high quality images and videos could harm the morals of the local population. "The diocese has formally taken the...
  • What is the best rural internet connection?

I live in the mountains, in a bowl. We don't have cable, no line of sight wireless communication, no DSL, etc. just standard phone lines. It seems that satellites might be the best option, but I have heard a lot of bad things about satellite connections, poor upload and download times especially as more people use the system, latency (lag time) problems, relatively high costs. Radio communication seems touchy and slow. I might be able to put in a tower on the mountain between me and civilization. Should I work on getting WiMax here? What is the best solution? I...

I've searched extensively online for a new ISP. No luck. I think I'll have better luck with recommendations from my FReeper FRiends. Requirements: 1) It must be cheap. No more than $140-$180 a year ($15 a month max) or not much higher. 2)It must be faster than 46.6 kbps. (That's the fastest speed I can log on at now.) Would prefer 50.6 kbps or higher. Thank you for any recommendations.

CHICAGO, Feb. 22 (UPI) -- Is dialup Internet access, so to say, as dead as disco? Or does it still have a few smooth moves left? The conventional wisdom is that broadband is overtaking good old modems as the preferred access choice of online consumers. But analysts tell United Press International's The Web the situation may not be as simple as portrayed by some broadband enthusiasts. One of Europe's leading telecom providers, France Telecom, recently reported that it would not meet anticipated 2005 revenue projections and expressed caution about investments in next-generation broadband technologies, including FTTH and VDSL2.By Gene Koprowski

I have 2 computer problems:1) Compaq Presario 2140 laptop. XP Pro. Dial-up modem will not work - when I try, I get the "no dial tone" message. Phone line is securely in place. Phone line works, and desktop computer dial-up using same line also works. Any suggestions?2) Dell 8400 Desktop. XP Pro. I have Spyware Blaster downloaded, but cannot get updates. When I try, message pops up saying problem reaching server, try back later, blah, blah, blah. Uninstalled and re-installed, but no luck. Then downloaded Spyware Guard. When first tried to download update, box popped up with 3 options (think...

Living in rural VA, I can easily relate to this woman's frustration. D.I.P.S The conflict in Iraq, according to G.W. may be winding down, but there is one in Eastern Kentucky that is just beginning. This battle will not get a great deal of media coverage. The Fox News network will not be redundantly informing you of rumors and general disinformation, and I seriously doubt that 200 thousand dollars will be spent to have a Hollywood designer create a back drop for news conferences, but there is a battle brewing none-the-less. This noteworthy struggle is being waged without any coalition...

A month or so ago I posted a Vanity, addressing the topic of "Ping Lists." It turned into a rather large thread, and the random pinging seemed to disappear. I hate to waste bandwidth by posting on this topic again, but .....again I am bombarded by pings that I DID NOT REQUEST. This morning there were TWO people pinging me to the same thread, posted twice. This particular thread was ENORMOUS and VERY graphics-intensive. It took eight full minutes to load. You see, NOT EVERYONE CAN GET HIGH SPEED SERVICE, and with old dialup phone lines that can't handle anymore...

I live in MN, and I'm looking for something cheap yet reliable. Sorry, anything besides 56K dial-up (like cable or DSL) is not an option at this time.
