Joe Messina, one of the original guitarists for Motown Records' in-house backing band the Funk Brothers, died on Monday at the age of 93. Born on Dec. 13, 1928, in Detroit, Messina began playing guitar as a child and dropped out of high school to pursue a career as a jazz musician. He gigged in local clubs and led a band, the Joe Messina Orchestra, before joining the house band for the daily children's television show The Soupy Sales Show, where he played alongside jazz legends such as Charlie Parker, Miles Davis and John Coltrane. In 1959, Motown founder Berry...

Happy New Year! Here is a nice 2022 guitar thread.... in the chit chat section. I have owned this guy for 27 years now. Not a common guitar, but it plays so good. Resonates much more than normal. The neck is perfect. This is a 1983 strat. Originally came with only one tone knob and the input jack was where the bottom knob is.... in the pick guard. I had it professionally moved and a second tone knob installed. Top loader tremolo is not my favorite. (Pretty stiff). I am very good with a tremolo so I’m a little restricted...

Human remains found in a trash bag nearly 40 years ago have been identified as those of Frank “Frankie” Little Jr., a guitarist and songwriter for the R&B group The O’Jays, police said. The partial remains - first discovered in February 1982 in a garbage bag behind a now-shuttered business in Twinsburg, Ohio - were identified as Little’s using DNA provided by a close relative, police said in a statement Tuesday. “In October 2021, the DNA Doe Project provided the names of potential living relatives, who were able to provide Frank’s name,” Twinsburg police said, adding that Little’s identity was...

Steve Vai, who joined David Lee Roth's post-VAN HALEN band more than 35 years ago as lead guitarist, spoke to "CMS Music" about the musical influence and impact of legendary VAN HALEN axeman Eddie Van Halen. He said (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET): "I'm not unlike the average Edward fan in that he really had an effect. For Edward fans that really were touched by him, it's inexplicable, obviously; you can try to use words, but it doesn't really work. It's like that with many things. "I have a different position in that, yeah, one might say that I replaced the...

Youtube Text:Here's another song with an iconic guitar solo, but instead it's played in the style of Dire Straits. Besides using Mark Knopflers tricks and phrasings I also changed to beat to one that suits Dire Straits' uptempo style a little more. This is one of the few solos that I had worked out completely before I recorded it, so to get it right I had to do about 40 takes, and that is without counting practice runs. Hope you enjoy it!Played on my Fender Vintera 50s Strat Mod, over a Fender Blues Junior. Effects used: - Ibanez TS-9 Distortion-...

He might well have written and produced it too The guitarist with Booker T. & The M.G.’s, Stax Records’ house band, Steve Cropper backed scores of soul greats during the 60s as well as being a go-to producer. He’s also a songwriter whose compositions include classics such as Wilson Pickett’s In The Midnight Hour, Eddie Floyd’s Knock On Wood and Otis Redding’s (Sittin’ On) The Dock Of The Bay. Actors are strange folk and generally out of touch, but Matt Damon’s cluelessness about Donald Trump supporters might really take the Hollywood cake. The actor — known for “Good Will Hunting,” “Saving Private Ryan” and the “Bourne” franchise, among other roles — is an outspoken leftist even by the standards of Tinseltown who had to stoop to play a Trump supporter in his latest film, “Stillwater.” The movie sees him playing an oil rig worker whose daughter gets caught up in a European murder case a la Amanda Knox, according to Reuters. How do you play a Trump supporter? This...

On October 6th, Steve Perry got a text from his recording engineer that read, “Oh man, Eddie Van Halen. I can’t believe it.” The former Journey frontman had no idea what he was talking about. “I don’t watch the news anymore,” he says. “And so I picked up the phone and said, ‘What’s going on?'” When he heard the tragic news that the guitarist died after a long battle with cancer, Perry’s mind instantly went back to 1978 when Van Halen opened for Journey for eight weeks on the Infinity tour. He phoned up Rolling Stone to tell stories from...
