Detroit’s fiscal woes have been front and center in the news recently. Now this is a new claim that Detroit’s pension woes are not as bad as Kevyn Orr, the city’s emergency manager, estimated. Orr stated that the underfunding of the city’s two pension funds at $3.5 billion. Orr arrived at that figure in part by estimating the funds’ expected annual return on assets at 7%. The city’s actuary, meanwhile, says the size of the gap is actually $977 million, based in part on an expected annual return of 8%. So, not as bad as Orr’s calculated. But can Detroit...

Gunfire from Syria was directed at IDF soldiers who were patrolling the border on Sunday morning. The IDF returned fire on a Syrian army position from which the soldiers were attacked. There were no injuries or damage reported on the Israeli side, the army said. All work along the security fence to fortify the frontier has been temporary suspended, the army added. The IDF did not clarify whether the incident was the result of accidental fire from the Syrian civil war or a direct attack on the IDF soldiers.

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS 5) – When you make a return this holiday season you may have to hand over more than just your receipt, as retailers try to prevent repeated returns. “I was required to provide them a copy of my driver’s license, where they actually took the information and scanned it into their database,” said a shopper who asked to be identified only as Leslie. Leslie told the sales associate at The Children’s Place that she was uncomfortable handing over her ID just to make an exchange, but she was told that the requirement is corporate policy. In fact,...

Is there some great big secret buried in Mitt Romney's old tax returns? Though the Republican candidate for president has made his most recent years' returns public, Democrats have been demanding he release them all, presumably so they can mine the forms for things to attack him over. But maybe it's not Democrats Romney has to worry about: A group of computer hackers claim to have stolen Romney's tax returns from accounting firm PWC, and are threatening to release them to the public if the former Massachusetts governor does not fork over a million dollars. According to the hackers, the...

In 2011, the Ryans had an adjusted gross income of $323,416 and paid $64,764 in federal taxes. In 2010, Ryan and his wife had an income of $215,417 and paid $34,233 in federal taxes. Roughly more than half of that income came from Ryan's salary as a member of Congress. The rest...
  • Tax returns? Obama's return is the REAL read.

All the libs are up in arms about Romney "hiding something" regarding his tax returns. Romney's 2010 return and other financial statements are on his website. But, the REAL read is Obama's tax return. You can read it at: http://www.whitehouse.gov/sites/default/files/rss_viewer/POT US_taxes.pdf Along with all kinds of interesting tidibits of his income and deductions, I found something interesting on statement #8 of his Schedule C attachments. He lists income from Dystel & Goderich in the amount of 1,108,048. Miriam Goderich did some editing work for Obama, and I'm assuming that Obama paid for their services. However, why are THEY paying Obama...

Antonio Houston is one out of the hundreds of folks who say they have yet to receive their 2011 tax refund. "I've been waiting for a long time and it's just kind of crazy. Forget Mitt Romney and Bain Capital. If you want to find the real greedy one percent, you need look no further than Barack Obama. According to tax returns released yesterday, Barack and Michelle Obama earned $1.2 million from 2000 through 2004 yet managed no more than $10,772 in charitable donations. This amounts to less than one percent of their income. Upon becoming public figures, there was hope and some (spare) change, as they did a lot better in earning and a little better in giving. In 2005 and 2006, they donated $137,622, which was just over 5 percent of the...

If private equity and hedge fund managers were optimistic that the election of one of their own would preserve their prized carried-interest tax break, Monday’s debate must have given them pause. Given the chance to defend his low tax rate by talking up the importance of low taxes on investment for job creation and competitiveness, Mitt Romney balked. Instead, he made an implicit case for why investment taxes shouldn’t be any lower than they are — as Newt Gingrich wants — and defended his own conduct rather than seeking to justify the tax policy.

In Egypt, calls for jizya—the tribute doctrinally demanded and historically collected from conquered infidels—are increasing day by day, by those who wish to be true to the words of Koran 9:29: Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, nor forbid that which Allah and his Messenger have forbidden, nor follow the religion of truth [Islam], from the People of the Book [Christians and Jews], until they pay the jizya with willing submission, and feel themselves utterly subdued. Accordingly, days ago, Ahmed Imran—a candidate of Egypt's Salafi party, the "Party of Light," which won some 20% of...
  • GOP storms Westmoreland Courthouse (Democrat heavy County near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania)

Tribune Review (Pittsburgh area) ^ | 9 November 2011 | By Rich Cholodofsky
Republicans authored a historic shift in Westmoreland County government on Tuesday. Charles Anderson and Tyler Courtney secured a majority on the board of commissioners for the first time since 1956. It also appears that Republicans swept all five row offices, defeating four longtime incumbents, according to unofficial election results. Two-term incumbent Controller Carmen Pedicone, potentially the last Democrat standing, lost by 262 votes to write-in candidate Jeff Balzer. "We worked so hard for this. It's just going to be a great victory. I am so happy, you don't even know," said Chairwoman Elaine Gowaty of the county Republican Committee. "I...

All but one precinct reporting now and it appears the GOP has taken control of the county commission for the first time since the Eisenhower administration. This is a county so Democrat heavy that Walter Mondale carried it during the Reagan landslide in 1984.But every row office now appears to have flipped to the GOP with only one race too close to call: The County Controller whose credentials were so good that even the county's GOP leaning daily newspaper endorsed the Democrat.

A highly unpopular U.S. Congress returns to work from a month-long recess next week facing a crush of challenges -- from creating jobs to expanding U.S. trade to finding another $1.2 trillion or so in spending cuts. With voters demanding more compromise and less fighting in Washington, lawmakers may try harder to find common ground with Democratic President Barack Obama on these and other matters, such as taxes, regulations and disaster aid. The Democratic-led Senate returns on Tuesday and the Republican-led House of Representatives convenes on Wednesday with a dismal popularity level. Opinion polls taken in the aftermath of their...

WASHINGTON - Kansas became on Tuesday the second U.S. state to return a large federal grant meant to help it create a prototype health insurance exchange as part of the Obama administration's healthcare overhaul. Republican Governor Sam Brownback said the state would give back the $31.5 million it received from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to become an early leader, along with six other states, in establishing health insurance exchanges that other local government could use as a model.

The outside looks the same: a big keyboard with a full computer beneath it, and those fat-ass clickety-clack keys. The keyboard description is such a loving homage to that vintage typing sensation, it sounds downright pornographic: "...the new Commodore 64 features genuine Cherry brand key switches, which provide a feel much better than the original, with a lovely IBM classic mechanism and click sound." Inside is where things get modern, because the whole system's had a major overhaul. The new C64 comes with a 1.8GHz Intel processor, up to 4GB RAM, runs Windows 7, and plays back Blu-ray discs. There’s...
